General RV Employees Help Clean Up Detroit

Employees of General RV Center, the nation’s largest family-owned RV dealership, rolled up their sleeves to make a difference in Detroit, Michigan, as part of the Six Day Project, hosted by Life Remodeled. On October 5, 2023, nearly 30 members of the company’s marketing department joined 5,000 other volunteers to mow lawns, rake leaves, and clean up more than 500 lots.

The multiday volunteer effort works to clean up blight and beautify the Cooley Community on the city’s northwest side.

“Sixty years ago, General RV Center opened its first location in Detroit, and it was only appropriate that we returned to give back to a community that helped our company get its start,” said Alicia Gewinner, the company’s director of marketing and advertising. This is the second year General RV, a Life Remodeled sponsor, has worked with the Detroit nonprofit.

Since 2014, Life Remodeled has worked to create lasting revitalization, turning vacant properties into community hubs. Over 77,000 volunteers have worked on more than 2,000 city blocks in Detroit thanks to corporate and philanthropic support.

More RVers Are Camping Solo

According to The Dyrt, a camping information and booking app, camping alone is growing in popularity. According to the company’s 2023 Camping Report, the number of solo campers increased by 28 percent from 2021 to 2022.

“It’s the perfect time to reconnect with nature, and with yourself, and maybe even make new friends,” said The Dyrt camper Rachel P. of Georgia. “I can’t even describe how peaceful it is just to sit and listen to the sounds of the woods. There’s nothing like it.”

As noted in the report, avid campers — defined as survey respondents who camped 11 or more times in 2022 — were 36.1 percent more likely to camp alone. Avid campers also were twice as likely to have worked from the campsite or camped during winter.

One respondent, Alice, suggests solo campers, especially women, take precautions. “Let people know where you are going and check in. Make sure you have all your supplies and tools and safety equipment and know how to use them. I suggest a dry run close by. Check the tires. Bring something to do in case of bad weather, like hobbies or books or crafts.”
