KOA held a Welcome Reception on Tuesday evening to kick off its convention.

The Kampgrounds of America Inc.’s International Convention in Las Vegas kicked off on Tuesday (Nov. 14) evening with a Welcome Reception and an excursion to the Beatles LOVE Cirque du Soleil show at the Mirage — which is in a transition to the Hard Rock Hotel.

Held a few miles off the strip, Kama Humphrey, KOA’s director of training and events, noted that this year’s theme is Viva KOA! With Formula One set to be in town this weekend, Humphrey said that the Las Vegas strip is going to be filled with race fans and other unique opportunities throughout the week.

The convention was expected to bring in around 800 attendees. On the expo side, the convention is working with a slightly smaller space and around 150 vendors are going to take part.

Today, friction points and the future direction of KOA are going to be topics during the opening general session which is typically marked by speeches from KOA executives, including Toby O’Rourke, CEO and president of the company.

Bestselling author and executive coach Ryan Leake is set to be the keynote speaker at this year’s convention and he will be speaking at lunch.

“A lot of times when you own a business, there is no leader for the leader,” Humphrey continued. “He will go through what it looks like to be led by yourself and what tools and things a park owner needs to inspire themselves.”

Attendees will also be able to take in more than 25 sessions, with around 20 new session topics at this year’s convention.

“We record all of those sessions as well, so if somebody isn’t able to make one because they went to another one, they will still be able to watch the sessions they missed,” noted Humphrey.

The KOA Owner’s Association is going to be hosting a murder mystery event tonight.

“They have partnered with Broadway Murder Mysteries to put on this campground-themed murder mystery,” Humphrey explained. “The event is a fundraiser to help support Care Camps, which assists oncology camps across North America.”

KOA owners can learn more about the convention through the KOA intranet.
