Notes from Kalvin Reid and the CIAS Communications Team:
The Canadian International AutoShow’s annual Media Preview Day featured 31 vehicles making their debut, building the event’s reputation as Canada’s pre-eminent destination to get a first glimpse at the cars, trucks and SUVs that will be gracing showroom floors in the coming months and years — and the concepts that will inspire the designs and technology of tomorrow.
This list of premiere vehicles included formal presentations unveiling the 2025 Porsche Taycan and 2024 Porsche Panamera — as well as a first-look at the Porsche Vision Gran Turismo concept — the Volvo EX90, INFINITI Qe concept and QX Monogram concept, 2025 Genesis GV80 Coupe and 2025 Kia Carnival, as well as presentations for the VinFast VF 3 and VF Wild pickup truck, and the super cars and hyper cars of Grand Touring Automobiles, Canada’s premier retailer of luxury automobiles which is celebrating 50 years in business.
“We take pride at the Canadian International AutoShow to bring consumers interesting and unique vehicles alongside a showcase of the newest and latest production models that will be in the market in the coming years,” says Jason Campbell, General Manager of the AutoShow. “We have had a very successful Media Preview Day, setting the stage for car enthusiasts, car shoppers and families to spend the next 10 days exploring the automotive world right here in Toronto.”
Media Preview Day launched on Thursday with a special opening presentation and the Canadian Car of the Year Awards, presented by AJAC. Mate Rimac, CEO of Bugatti Rimac, and Paul Cummings, the CEO of Toronto luxury car dealer Grand Touring Automobiles, opened Media Preview Day with a panel discussion and the presentation of the Rimac Nevera, billed as the quickest car in the world. The Nevera — which will be showcased in the Grand Touring Automobiles exhibit on the 700 level of the South Building in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre — pulled up the stage driven by renowned automotive journalist, television and social media star Richard Hammond, who joined the crew on stage for the official opening.
In the Canadian Car of the Year Awards, AJAC writers voted for the 2024 Toyota Prius as Canadian Car of the Year, and the Toyota Grand Highlander was named Canadian Utility of the Year. In newly minted categories for electric vehicles, Genesis swept the field, taking the Canadian Electric Car of the Year with its GV70 and the Canadian Electric Utility of the Year with its Electrified G80.

Encore GX sales increased more than 50% year-over-year in Ontario and Envista sales are on the rise after this vehicle became available in September of last year. This increase is due in part to the newly unveiled Buick design language that launched with the Encore GX and the first-ever Envista, building on the brand’s disciplined focus on premium amenities at approachable price points. These traits along with dealership experience are why consumers are choosing Buick.

Two Canadian Vehicle Debuts Highlight Subaru’s Display
at 2024 Canadian International AutoShow
Fan-favourite St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs will have an extended visit this year!
Subaru will be showcasing two cars for the first time in Canada at the 2024 Canadian International AutoShow — and it is extending the visit from the always popular St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs.
The 2025 Subaru Forester, which will be the centrepiece of the Subaru display on the 300 level of the North Building in the Metro Toronto Convention Centre, will be making its first appearance in Canada at the AutoShow — as will the 2024 Subaru WRX RS. Subaru will also have the ever-popular therapy dogs, through a partnership with St. John
Ambulance’s Therapy Dog Program, at the AutoShow for seven days this year, up from the one day they have typically come for a visit.
• 2025 Subaru Forester — The sixth-generation SUV offers the most advanced features, modern design and improved ride comfort in its history. The Forester has resonated well among Canadian SUV buyers, with one
in four Subarus sold in the past 25 years being a Forester.
• 2024 Subaru WRX RS — The new trim level offers enhanced performance and handling capability, thanks to a high-performance Brembo braking system and RS-tuned suspension. Following BRZ, EyeSight Driver
Assist Technology is now standard on all 2024 WRX models equipped with a manual transmission.
The roster of Subaru vehicles will also include the 2024 Subaru Solterra, the company’s only EV model, which will also be available for a drive on the indoor EV Test Track at the AutoShow.
New for the AutoShow is an exclusive section of the Subaru booth, updated to embody the brand through its Badge of Ownership Program, love for Pets and partnership with St. John Ambulance’s Therapy Dog Program. All attendees can receive a custom pet tag for their furry friend and learn more about the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dogs while they are tail-wagging live on location. Loyal Subaru customers will have the unique opportunity to sign up for their Badge of Ownership to share and display their interests with other Subaru Owners.
The Subaru Wilderness Area in the Subaru booth will focus on the Leave No Trace Canada Pledge program that promotes principles for camping responsibly. Every visitor who takes the pledge at the AutoShow will have a tree planted by Subaru in Canada.
At a special exhibit on the 200 level of the North Building in the Convention Centre, Subaru will extend its Wilderness Area, giving out custom toques.

All-New Toyota Prius/Prius Prime Wins 2024 North American Car of the Year Award
Since the unveiling and subsequent launch, the all-new Toyota Prius/Prius Prime has earned high praise and accolades throughout the auto industry. The vehicle responsible for starting the hybrid revolution nearly 25 years ago earned one of the most coveted awards in the automotive sector – the 2024 North American Car of the Year.
AJAC – The Automotive Journalists of Canada, named Prius the Car of the Year at the CIAS on February 15, 2024.
When Toyota designers and engineers started working on the fifth generation of the legendary Prius, they were determined to create a bold statement with a winning combination of style, performance, and efficiency. Today, the Automobile Journalists Association of Canada (AJAC) recognized that vision as it announced the 2024 Toyota Prius is its Canadian Car of the Year.
“When the Prius started the electrification revolution almost a quarter-century ago, it quickly became the global ambassador for sustainable mobility – and the new, fifth generation Prius continues to inspire with its unbeatable blend of style, the driving fun of a well-engineered car, the efficiency of Toyota’s industry-leading hybrid electric expertise, and the intelligence of our advanced connectivity and active safety technologies,” said Cyril Dimitris, Vice President, Toyota Canada Inc. “Everyone at Toyota Canada is thrilled that the members of AJAC agree – and we thank them for this important award.”
AJAC announced the award today at the Canadian International Auto Show in Toronto, where the 2024 Prius will be on display in the Toyota booth February 16-25, alongside a full range of Toyota vehicles and technologies.
The first-generation Prius debuted in 1997 in Japan and was the world’s first mass-produced hybrid vehicle. It arrived in Canada in 2000 and since then, more than 100,000 Prius models have been sold in the country.
Now in its fifth generation, the 2024 Prius features an athletic silhouette and a clean, modern design that excites. Inside, the Prius welcomes up to five adults to a high-tech cabin characterized by smart design and soft-touch materials.
Under the hood, the Prius features a 5th generation hybrid powertrain that delivers 196 combined horsepower and a 0-100 km/h time of 7.2 seconds. Every Prius sold in Canada features Toyota’s electronic on-demand AWD system as standard, which contributes to driving stability under a range of road and weather conditions while remaining surprisingly efficient: The Prius achieves an impressive fuel efficiency rating of 4.8L/100km city/highway combined.
Every Prius is also a high-tech showcase, headlined by the powerful yet user-friendly Toyota Multimedia system and the active technologies of Toyota Safety Sense 3.0.
