‘Workamper News’ Moving Print Mag to Online Newsletter

Workamper NewsAfter 35 years, the last printed issue of Workamper News — the November/December 2022 issue — has been mailed to subscribers, according to Jody Anderson, the executive director of Workamper News, a membership organization that works with workampers across North America.

Moving into 2023, Heber Springs, Ark.-based Workamper News has focused on rebuilding its website and other systems, and part of that focus included the discontinuation of the printed magazine, Anderson told Woodall’s Campground Magazine, a sister publication of RVBusiness.

“As the leader of the workamping industry and the creator of the community, we are very well connected with those living this lifestyle and wanting to seek opportunities, as well as the businesses that are looking to hire these workampers,” she explained. “As we’ve seen the internet develop over the years, we know that workampers want a more streamlined, easier way to find opportunities that are going to be right for them. Employers also want a faster way to connect with the right workampers.

“As we’re moving into 2023 with a complete rebuild of our website and systems, part of that furthering and making the tools better for the people using them was discontinuing the magazine and enhancing and improving the online tools,” Anderson added. “That’s what our members and the community is looking for. We all want things to be a little bit easier, and so we’re doing some simplification and enhancement of the online tools to further the goals and help workampers and employers succeed at this lifestyle.”

She noted to WCM that while the printed edition of the magazine is going away, Workamper News will still be sending out a bi-monthly, smaller e-newsletter to employer members.

“This is something that I started a few years ago,” Anderson highlighted. “It usually just includes some helpful articles and reminders, tidbits, advice, info about what’s going on in the community, as well as some resources that we know will be beneficial to our employer members, whether they’re a campground, RV park or other business operation. That’s still one benefit that our employer members can continue looking forward to.”

Workamper News was founded in the 1980s by a young couple, Greg and Debbie Robus, to help RVers find job openings and volunteer positions that worked for their lifestyles. They then spent the summer of 1987 editing, designing and fine-tuning the first edition, according to Anderson.

Initially, the magazine was shipped to 50 folks who had signed on for an introductory yearly subscription price of $15. Five years later the newsletter had grown from eight to 24 pages and boosted over 6,000 subscribers.
