Why I Bought This: Rockwood Geo Pro G19FD — A Super Liveable SUV Towable

A few years back, when Andrew Cooper and Dina Bochnik-Cooper found themselves ready to upgrade from tent camping, they looked at what their Subaru Outback could tow and decided they wanted, as Andrew puts it, “a few more creature comforts.” They didn’t, however, want a truck since their tow vehicle would continue to be Dina’s daily commuter. The compromise: a 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee, with the factory tow package, and a 2019 Rockwood Geo Pro 14FK.

Sharing the 14-footer were the couple’s four traveling companions: Malna, Wrigely, Blue, and George, lap-size Hungarian sheepdogs called Pumis, who sometimes felt a bit underfoot. So last year, the family upgraded to the 19FD, a 20-footer with a Murphy bed, a bigger bathroom, and more exterior storage. “We looked at other makes,” Andrew says, “but we loved everything about the Geo Pro, and we just wanted a little more elbow room.”

With an unloaded weight of 3,233 pounds and a hitch weight of 409, it’s still nothing the Cherokee can’t handle. And with the bed folded up, Andrew says, it was a plenty roomy respite last summer during an unexpectedly rainy weekend in New Hampshire—for people and Pumis both. MSRP starts at $39,891 for the 2024 model.

Standout Features

  1. A standard 200-watt solar panel (with a second as an option) and a 1,800-watt inverter help make the Geo Pro boondock-friendly.
  2. Heading off pavement is easier with the rig’s lifted axles and 15-inch mud-terrain radials.
  3. Geo Pros owe their lightweight, in part, to aluminum framing and Azdel composite walls, which resist delamination, rot, and mildew.
  4. The 19FD has a three-burner cooktop, gas oven, and microwave inside, along with a propane griddle that mounts to the wall outside
