Various kangaroo species, such as the Red Kangaroo and Eastern Grey Kangaroo, are common in the Outback in summer. These adorable marsupials can often be spotted hopping around, but beware, they may be cute, but they are powerful animals.

Emus

These incredible creatures are the largest flightless birds in the world. You can often see an emu wandering through the Outback. They have distinct long necks and powerful legs. Emus nest in winter, but by summer the chicks have hatched and you’ll often see them foraging in the grasslands and open forests. They also love hanging out in Coffin Bay National Park on the Eyre Peninsula.

Thorny Devil and Other Reptiles

During summer, sun-loving reptiles are more active. You may encounter various snakes, including the highly venomous Inland Taipan, and lizards like the Perentie and the adorably spiky Thorny Devil.

Kingfisher and Other Birds

The Outback is a birdwatcher’s paradise, especially during summer when various species are abundant. Look out for colorful parrots, the gorgeous and brightly colored Kingfisher, galahs, cockatoos, and wedge-tailed eagles soaring in the skies.

Budgies, a small beautiful green parrot, call the Australian Outback home. They live there year-round, but they are easier to find after rain and in areas with an escape from the extreme heats. The Outback as their natural habit can go weeks without water.

Dingoes

Australia’s native wild dogs, dingoes, are found in some parts of the Outback. Keep a safe distance as tourists can be fined for getting too close.

Kangaroos and wallabies, a smaller type of kangaroo, still hangout in the Outback in winter.

Echidnas

A cuter porcupine-version of an animal, these unique egg-laying mammals, known as spiny anteaters, are active throughout the year. These adorable, yet spikey, animals are best observed from afar. You’ll have the best chance of spotting them as they look for insects.

Birds

Many bird species are still present during the winter months. Look out for migratory birds like the beautiful rainbow bee-eater, accurately named, and the uniquely colored blue and white budgerigars.

Bilbies

The Greater Bilby, an endangered marsupial, is native to the Outback and is sometimes spotted in the region during winter. These unusual animals are characterized by huge thin ears, similar to rabbits and a long snout. Their hind legs look similar to kangaroos and they are also marsupials, with a pouch.

Snakes and Lizards

While reptiles may be less active in winter due to cooler temperatures, some species remain active, such as the Central Netted Dragon and various pythons.

Other Animals Not to Miss On Your Visit to Australia

Platypuses

Platypuses are active all year round, but mostly during twilight and in the night and quite rare to spot, but as they are unique to Australia, they are a joy to view.

Most wildlife parks in Australia will allow you to pet and hold Koalas. But if you would prefer to see this cute creature in its natural habitat, then they can be spotted, usually enjoying a snack of eucalyptus leaves, all the way along Australia’s temperate eastern coast.

Taking in amazing wildlife can be a thrilling experience. Enjoy your camping trip to Australia even more by taking some time to look for some unforgettable wildlife.
