Watch: Researcher Tracks Intense Swarms of Sharks Near the California Coast

A shark researcher in California is celebrating Shark Week by sharing incredible drone videos of swarming sharks.

Dr. Andrew Nosal, an associate professor of biology at Point Loma Nazarene University, posted the videos on Twitter. His team recorded these clips from just off the coast of La Jolla, an area of San Diego, California. The video highlights some of Nosal’s work that aims to learn more about the movement patterns of sharks.

Nosal says the videos are originally from September 2020. You can see them testing their tracking software by following the white circle that’s locked in on a specific shark.

The sharks here are leopard sharks, and when they gather like this it’s called an aggregation. Nosal says the crowd of sharks is primarily mature pregnant females that go into warm shallow water to incubate their developing embryos.

Leopard sharks are considered harmless to people and generally only eat small fish, crabs and shrimp.
