Viral ‘Blood Rain’ Video Is Fascinatingly Weird

Omid Badrouj is a tour guide who operates on Hormuz Island in Iran. Hormuz Island is famously home to Red Beach, where the earth contains heavy concentrations of iron oxide (aka rust). Badrouj was there with some tourists when a torrential downpour created what appeared to be a gushing red waterfall and a blood-red river flowing straight into the sea. The “blood rain” video has over 1 million likes and has been shared widely by media outlets.

In reality, the rain isn’t red; it’s regular rain that’s mixing with the oxidized iron in the ground to create a fast-flowing flow of water that’s crashing off the cliff and into the ocean. As it does, the red-tinted water mixes with the seawater to create reddish waves near the shore. It’s absolutely incredible to watch.
