MEET THE BLACK JACK CHOKKA

Now and then, I come across a product that seems particularly useful. Such was the case with the Black Jack Trailer Jack Chokka. Is this product basically a glorified wheel chock? Well, yes. And no. It is indeed a wheel chock designed for tandem-axle trailers, but it will completely eliminate wheel movement in either direction.

I had no experience with the Chokka when I pulled it out of its box for the first time. I attempted to set it up without using the instructions, and quickly learned that the instructions were useful (as they often are). Once I bothered to read them, I had the Chokka set up in moments.

black jackIt comes in two parts, each part connected to a zinc-plated wedge/chock. It’s simply a matter of connecting the two parts together, placing them in position between the two wheels on your preferred side of the caravan, and stepping on it. It’s difficult to explain in words. Your best bet is to watch the video.

The arms of the Chokka are powder-coated steel, and the steel lanyard (coated in protective rubber) allows you to disengage the Chokka and lift it, with no additional bending required.

It suits tandem-axle trailers/caravans with wheel spacings of between 400 and 600mm – the vast majority.

Being made of steel, the Chokka does have a little heft to it – it weighs 3.5kg – but it certainly feels like a sturdy product. Stepping on the mechanism ensures the chocks/wedges becomes tucked very securely and tightly against the rubber of the tyres. It is even lockable. We just grabbed a padlock from Bunnings and it worked a treat.

The Black Jack Trailer Jack Chokka costs $98.50, or $188 for a pair. Sure, you can always just use a block of wood or a plastic chock to prevent rolling, but they won’t do the job as well as this product.

THE BLACK JACK JOCKEY BLOCK

You’ve just pulled up for the day and it’s time to unhitch. But there’s a problem: the ground is very soft and the jockey wheel wants to sink. That’s where the Black Jack Trailer Jack Jockey Block comes in.

black jackRated to 6000kg, the Jockey Block will provide a firm foundation for your jockey wheel every time. It even has a moulded ‘cradle’ where the jockey wheel can rest. The other beaut thing: it provides 150mm of height, so you won’t need to crank the jockey wheel handle anywhere near as much you probably normally do. In fact, it’s said to save up to 40 cranks. If you have a particularly high-riding van that uses a traditional jockey wheel, you’re probably also used to carrying offcuts of timber in order to account for the lack of travel in the shaft of the jockey wheel – we’ve all done that before.

It suits traditional jockey wheels, Black Jack Trailer Jacks, scissor jacks and more.

I have to admit that the Jockey Block, which costs $89, seems durable. Better yet, unlike blocks of wood, it will resist dirt, grime and oil, and it’s easy to clean.

Yes, you can certainly keep using those offcuts of timber… or you can upgrade to the 2.5kg Jockey Block and never look back.
