These Animals Sent a Bear Running Through a Neighborhood

What could spook a bear enough to send it running? A couple of coyotes a fraction of a black bear’s size chased a bear through a Burbank, California lawn last week. Was it bravado, self defense, or did they just want to play? The bear wanted absolutely nothing to do with its aggressors, which didn’t seem daunted by the larger animal’s size.

In the video, you can see a bear run across the grass on a Ring camera followed by two relatively small animals—coyotes. The bear then comes back across the yard, moving slower this time. A coyote is still trotting after it, as if trying to scare it away. The other coyote is farther back by the street. At one point, one of the coyotes gets close to the bear’s backside, but when the bear turns around, the coyote scampers away.

KTLA5 reports that the homeowner, Barbara Cullen, and other residents of the neighborhood say bear sightings are rare there. However, a bear and two coyotes at once? That’s particularly rare.
