Thermal Camera Reveals Lion With Wire Snare Around Its Neck
The Sheldrick Wildlife Trust shared the story of a male African lion who needed some help. The lion had a wire snare around its neck, and wildlife officials paying very close attention to a thermal trail camera were able to spot it. Wildlife officials then leapt into action to help the lion. Here’s what happened.
“At first glance, it looked like the Chyulu lions were just enjoying a lazy morning,” Sheldrick Wildlife Trust wrote in its Instagram post. “But then, starkly visible through the thermal lens, a wire snare was seen cinched around one of the male’s necks.”
Mobile vet units deployed to find the lion, dart it, remove the wire trap, and get him back up on his feet.
“Left untended, the snare could have had lethal implications for this young lion. But fortunately, it had not yet caused a grievous injury,” Sheldrick Wildlife Trust explained. “The team removed the wire, treated the wound, revived the patient, and watched as he rejoined his coalition, who was waiting nearby.”
