Microfiber Chamois Towel Is Perfect for RVers and Holds a ½ Gallon of Water!

I get asked to review products fairly frequently, and generally agree as long as I can see a value for RVers. I was recently asked to review the Thirst Trap from Chemical Guys. The Thirst Trap is a dense drying chamois towel. Its claim to fame is that it can hold ½ gallon of water. While I didn’t think I could put together an entire review on a simple towel, I was sucked into the marketing hype of that ½ gallon water claim.

You should know at this point I recently replaced a toilet in my home with a model that the manufacturer claimed was able to flush seven billiard balls. I don’t know if I’ll ever need that capability, but I was sold. I didn’t quite understand why a towel could or should hold a ½ gallon of water, but I was intrigued enough to find out.

It’s a (Thirst) Trap!

The name “Thirst Trap” is certainly clever enough, albeit invoking images of Admiral Akbar as much as a car-washing product. If you aren’t familiar with Chemical Guys by now, the company has a ton of products for cleaning vehicles of all kinds. The towel itself is soft and sturdy, measuring 24-by-28 inches. It certainly did not look like it was going to hold ½ gallon of water, but I was going to give it a try. If nothing else than to prove the marketing claim. The density of this towel is deceiving, as I found out. I also discovered exactly how that claim of holding a ½ gallon of water is not only accurate, but incredibly beneficial to RVers.

Testing The Thirst Trap

Originally I was simply going to test the Thirst Trap towel on my toad, a 2016 JKU four-door Jeep. As circumstances unfolded, I ended up washing our 43-foot Tiffin Phaeton that weekend instead. So, I put the towel through its paces, quickly learning the value of the capability that the Thirst Trap professed.

The ½ Gallon Claim

Since using the Thirst Trap towel to dry my rig was bound to skew my results, I opted to first test the claim that this drying towel would hold a half-gallon of water. The result…it did! It was not easy wringing out this dense heavy towel, but the water just kept coming and coming. You can see from the image that the ½ gallon pitcher is nearly full, and the Thirst Trap towel is still quite damp. Note, that the “full” line on that pitcher is a full 1-inch or so below the bottom of the spout. My assumption is that if I had the ability to somehow wring out the towel completely, it would have yielded a full ½ gallon of water. In retrospect, simply immersing the towel in the pitcher to try and soak up all of the water would have been smarter and easier.

Benefits of the Thirst Trap To RVers

The question RVers might ask is, what benefit is this parlor trick when it comes to drying my RV? I’m so glad you asked! When I wash my motorhome, I generally use a decent sized soft brush on the end of an extended pole…so I don’t need the ladder. However, I then want to follow up right away with a solid wipe down, by hand, which requires a big, sturdy ladder that I have to drag around the entire RV to reach to the roof line.

Having a chamois towel such as the Thirst Trap significantly reduces the trips up and down the ladder to change towels. Parlor tricks aside, it’s quite shocking to see how much surface area you can wipe down with this thing. I was able to give all of the fiberglass on the RV a quick wipe and dry in one usage…in other words, no wringing out the towel.

Note that the towel is thick and sturdy, so you aren’t going to want to use it for some of the finer detail around edges and fittings that are harder to clean and less likely to be completely free of dirt. I’m thinking of door handles, mirror mounts, wiper mounts and other places where the big brush didn’t clean as well as a small towel or rag would. I prefer not to gunk up my nice drying towels with dirt and grease that those nooks and crannies can harbor. It’s best to keep your Thirst Trap clean and relegate it to the larger surfaces for quick efficient drying.

Conclusion

Whether you are drying your motorhome, trailer, or tow vehicle, the Thirst Trap from Chemical Guys is worthy of consideration. Visit chemicalguys.com for pricing and more information about the Thirst Trap and their full line of other vehicle cleaning products.
