There has been a tremendous amount of innovation across the entire RV industry in recent years. From posh luxury Class A models to compact and efficient camper vans to high-tech travel trailers, there has been no shortage of new ideas and paradigm-shifting designs. Even the truck camper space has seen some impressive new options that allow for more flexibility and comfort than ever before.

Case in point: the Switchback X1 from Super Pacific. This lightweight model fits on a wide variety of pickups and was built from the ground up with outdoor enthusiasts in mind. It takes a modular approach to its design, allowing owners to customize the unit to meet their personal needs, making it the perfect mobile base camp for any adventure.

A Four-Season Truck Camper

The X1 comes with a rooftop tent designed for four-season camping. The built-in shelter features three screen doors that provide 270º views and plenty of ventilation during the warmer months of the year. In the winter, heavy-duty door flaps made from marine-grade fabrics keep chilly winds at bay, creating a cozy interior space. The sleeping loft is further enhanced with a venting system that prevents condensation from gathering on the sides of the tent. An Exped Megamat Duo serves as a very comfortable mattress, ensuring a good night’s sleep no matter where you park.

Built from highly durable aerospace-grade materials, the X1 is more like a truck topper than a traditional camper. The unit fits most mid- and full-size pickups, creating a modular interior space inside the truck bed that is customizable in numerous ways. The camper ships with built-in mounting inserts, and owners can add Molle panels for storing and organizing gear. Universal t-slots offer compatibility with various awnings, cross bars, solar panels, and other accessories.

Living Room Mode

When not in use, the X1’s lofted sleeping area opens up to create what Super Pacific calls “living room mode.” In this configuration, owners utilize the combination of the X1 and the truck bed to create an interior space that offers protection from the elements. This allows owners to flex their creativity, adding as many or as few amenities as they like.

While in living room mode, the X1’s lofted sleeping space moves out of the way, creating enough room for passengers to stand up inside. This provides enough space for meal prep, gathering around a table, or just lounging after a long day on the trail. The camper’s side and rear panels open to provide ventilation while still managing to keep rain from reaching the interior. Those same doors offer secure access to the interior from the outside, making it easy to grab the gear you need before setting out on that next adventure.

Lots of Standard Features

The X1 would best be described as minimalistic compared to the larger, heavier, and more expensive truck campers offered by some of the competition. But that doesn’t mean it doesn’t include a number of excellent standard features. For instance, the rig comes in six powder-coated premium aluminum colors, with the tent available in two different fabric shades. The aforementioned Exped Megamat is included from the factory, and the camper is pre-wired for solar and comes with two built-in 12-volt charging ports. Owners can even choose from a rear acrylic tailgate window or a solid door.

Available upgrades for the X1 include Molle panels, add-on cargo packs, and a gear loft. Super Pacific offers the option to install a Yakima awning and cross bars at the factory and sells extensions for the lofted bed that provide more space for taller campers. You’ll even find a winter insulation kit that adds extra warmth for those cold-weather outings.

Pricing for the mid-size model starts at $13,495, while the full-size X1 will set you back an additional $500. Super Pacific backs the camper with a two-year limited warranty and even provides free installation if you’re in the Portland, Oregon, area.
