In 2022, the Grand Canyon welcomed more than 4.7 million visitors and nearly 80,000 backpackers, making it the country’s fourth most-visited national park. Of course, the park itself is 120 and 200 miles from the nearest big city, so visiting the Grand Canyon takes some planning. That’s why we compiled a list of the best sites for Grand Canyon camping.
For this article, we looked at a variety of travel sites and considered things like price, location, and amenities. We also looked for locations at both the north and south rim of the park. Here are the top 10 sites for Grand Canyon camping.
Northern
Kaibab Camper Village
Kaibab Camper Village offers a fantastic camping experience at the North Rim of the Grand Canyon. It’s also the only campground on the North Rim with full RV hookups and even accommodates large rigs over 40 feet. If you’re not bringing a big rig, tent sites and cabins are also available. You’ll find yourself off the beaten path, in a quiet and secluded location. And you’re only a 40-mile drive along the North Rim Parkway to the Canyon rim. What more could you ask for?

You’ll find the DeMotte Campground within the North Kaibab Ranger District just seven miles north of the entrance to the Grand Canyon National Park’s North Rim. Here you’ll see all kinds of wildlife including the tassel-eared Kaibab squirrel (which is found nowhere else in the world), and numerous species of birds. You and the family can enjoy picnicking, sightseeing and wildlife viewing hikes, and more. Don’t forget the obvious though, seeing unparalleled views of one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

It’s located just four miles south of the park entrance in the beautiful Kaibab National Forest. Jacob Lake Campground is basically a typical RV set-up site, which includes a picnic bench and fire pit for the most part. There are however very clean and well-maintained outhouse bathrooms and trash bins, but no hookups. If you’re looking for a shower you can drive down the road and pay a small cost. It’s still a great, remote place to stay if you’re only looking for the minimum, a place to camp out. It’s a bit of a drive to the Grand Canyon North Rim, but perhaps you’re making a little road trip out of it! If you’re looking for more peace and quiet, try and get a spot in the back of the campground.
