‘That’s One Way to Lose Dinner’: Angler Didn’t See This Coming

A man was fishing for dinner off the side of his family’s sailboat, his young kids standing by, when a bigger fish decided it wanted dinner, too. In fact, the bigger fish—a shark—decided it wanted the family’s dinner. The shark lunged for the fish on the line, shocking the angler, and his wife joked: “Well that’s one way to lose dinner.”

It’s likely the whole family will remember the moment a shark stole their catch of the day. Maddie Banditt posted the video, starring her husband Mat, on Instagram, and it attracted over a half-million views. Several people note that larger sharks will sometimes follow boats looking for an easy meal, just like this one did.

Mat Banditt is no novice angler, and he’s used to putting dinner on the table. (His Instagram bio reads: “Fishing, crabbing, hunting, food on the table.”) But sometimes, nature has a different plan. In this case, a shark went for Banditt’s catch, a “shovelnose shark” (also known as a shovelnose guitarfish, a type of ray), and stole it right from under him.
