SSI: 2022 Retail Sales Totaled 447,718 Units, Down 21.55%

There were 447,718 retail registrations in 2022, according to Statistical Surveys Inc., the Grand Rapids, Mich.-based firm that tracks retail sales and consumer demographic for the RV industry.

That figure is down 21.55% from the 570,771 in 2021 – the best year in recorded history. 2022’s total ranks as the 6th highest total, yet the lowest since 2016. (See tables below)

For further comparison, the total shipments for 2022 was 493,268 units, the third best year on record, according to the RV Industry Association’s (RVIA). That’s a difference of 45,550 units between retail sales and wholesale shipments for the year.

December 2022 Results

There were 17,069 retail registrations in December 2022, down 30.3% from the 24,490 recorded in December 2021. All category segments were down year-over-year and, for comparison, the 17,069 total is 2,838 units less than the 19,907 wholesale shipments recorded for the same month.

Full-Year 2022 Results: United States

  • Travel Trailers – There were 275,251 retail registrations in December 2022 (vs. 350,527 in 2021; a 21.5% decrease). Market share leaders for the year were: THOR Industries Inc. (41.0%), Forest River Inc. (33.8%) and Grand Design RV Co. (7.6%).
  • Fifth-Wheels – 72,849 (103,300; -29.5%). Market share leaders: THOR (43.0%), Forest River (29.6%), Grand Design (18.5%).
  • Camping Trailers – 6,875 (7,936; -13.4%). Market share leaders: Forest River (54.7%%), Aliner (17.0%), SylvanSport LLC (6.9%).
  • Park Models – 2,332 (2,708; -13.9%). Market share leaders: Skyline Champion (33.2%), Cavco Industries (20.2%), Kropf Mfg. Co. Inc. (11.9%).
  • Class A Motorhomes – 11,031 (14,790; -25.4%. Market share leaders: THOR (53.4%, Forest River (16.5%), Newmar (13.1%).
  • Class C Motorhomes – 20,028 (25,124; -20.3%). Market share leaders: THOR (52.4%), Forest River (24.0%), Winnebago Motorized (10.7%).
  • Class B Motorhomes – 13,959 (12,180; +14.6%). Market share leaders: THOR (37.8%), Winnebago Motorized (37.0%), REV Recreation Group (6.3%).

  • Camping Trailers – 829 (976; -15.1). Market share leaders: Forest River (77.1%), Aliner (9.7%) Mfr. Unknown (4.5%).
  • Park Models – 62 (39; +59.0%). Market share leaders: Woodland Park (51.6%), Forest River (32.3%), Staton Rock 3.2%).
  • Class A Motorhomes – 702 (761; -7.8%). Market share leaders: THOR (65.7%), Newmar (13.1%), Forest River (10.4%).
