On the eve of the 2023 Florida RV SuperShow in Tampa, Space Craft MFG and Volta Power Systems revealed a custom-built trailer with some truly mind-blowing specs. The 54-foot luxury towable includes a massive solar panel array and the largest lithium-ion battery bank that Volta has ever installed in a recreational vehicle. The result is a vehicle that gives us a glimpse of the potential future of off-grid camping.

The trailer was custom-built for a Space Craft client who will tow it using a semi-tractor. It includes a host of upscale features and amenities, such as residential-style appliances, an LG mini-split HVAC system, heated floors, a tankless water heater, and a 50” fireplace. It also comes with built-in Starlink internet and a convertible bedroom/garage with enough space to transport a dinghy vehicle. That garage even has a charging station to keep a small EV—such as a Volvo XC40 Recharge or Tesla Model 3—fully powered while on the go.

But the most impressive feature by far is the custom-built Volta power system installed in the trailer. That system includes a slide-out array of solar panels capable of generating up to 10,000 watts of power and a battery bank that can store 108 kilo-watt-hours (kWh) of electricity. When combined with the RV’s 485-gallon fresh water tank, the owners can camp off-grid for days at a time, even while running all of the onboard appliances, HVAC systems, and other equipment.

“Our customer’s goal was to maximize their boondocking capability for extended to indefinite periods of time,” Space Craft CEO Greg Wallman says via a press release announcing the trailer. “To accomplish that, we utilize the ability to remove black water and bring fresh water with the semi-tractor, and we integrated a self-replenishing clean energy strategy with a huge solar array and the Volta li-ion system.”

The solar panels on the trailer can reportedly generate up to 50kWh per day, depending on weather conditions and exposure to the sun. The system can also recharge its battery bank through shore power, a generator, and a secondary alternator installed in the tow vehicle.

“People want more than just a clean battery. They want all the power they need to create an experience just like home,” said Jack Johnson, co-founder, and CTO of Volta Power Systems. “The customer will be able to take a day trip in their electric vehicle while their Volta system is recharged by the solar panels. When they return, they can plug their car into the L2 charger, relax in the AC, and even cook dinner on electric appliances without any noise or emissions.”

The Space Craft trailer powered by Volta Power Systems makes its official debut at the Florida RV SuperShow. Attendees can check it out in person at Booth #202 Lakeside E from January 17-21, 2023.
