See the Rare and Adorable Baby Pudu That Has Scientists Excited

Pudu are the smallest deer in the world. Pudu fawns are even tinier and, unfortunately, they’re pretty rare. An adorable baby pudu born at Fundación Temaikèn, a biopark in Argentina, has scientists excited about the opportunity to study the animal and gain knowledge that could help the species in the wild. Pudus are “near threatened,” and there are only about 10,000 of them left on Earth.

Fundación Temaikèn says the baby was born earlier this month, and it weighs only 2.7 pounds. The fawn, a male, still has white spots on its fur coat, though the spots will fade as he grows into adulthood. Reuters reports that the foundation named the baby “Lenga” after a native tree species that only lives in the Andean Patagonian forest of Chile and Argentina. Once he’s grown, Lenga will likely top out at just 20 inches tall and weigh about 27 pounds at most.
