ATHENS, Texas – The National RV Training Academy (NRVTA) today announced the release of a PRO version of its RVTechCourse home-study RV maintenance and repair course.

The PRO version includes hands-on labs offered during live training at NRVTA’s RV Fundamentals class. Each lab includes handouts and other resource materials received by students attending in person, as well as videos of Todd Henson, NRVTA’s director of education, or one of the school’s technical assistants, going over a specific component.

The labs cover these topics:

  • Basic RV electrical systems, power cables and connections to shore power.
  • Basics of voltage, amperage and wattage in RV electrical systems.
  • The three electrical systems powering an RV and its components.
  • Resistance and how Ohm’s Law applies to RV electrical systems.
  • RV power requirements and how to meet them.
  • RV batteries, their types, maintenance and usage.
  • Converters, inverters and their functions in RV electrical systems.
  • AC voltage, protective devices, GFCI protectors and how to test AC polarity.
  • Capacitors and continuity testing.
  • Propane systems, safety devices, cylinders, operation tips and testing for leaks.
  • Basics of fresh water, waste water, water distribution and maintenance.
  • RV air conditioners and refrigeration systems as well as troubleshooting, refrigerator operation and efficiency testing.
  • Water heater operation, maintenance, troubleshooting and winterizing.
  • Furnace operation, types, troubleshooting, safety issues and maintenance.
  • RV exteriors, including roof maintenance, slide outs, landing gear, tires, chassis, leveling jacks and other components of an RV’s underbelly.
  • Wheel bearings, brakes and their maintenance in RV systems.

“When people buy RVs, they may think they know how those units work because they are handy around the house,” said Henson. “The problem is people will be traveling away from home and their comfort zone and encounter situations where they won’t know how to fix a problem. We teach the fundamentals of how a system is designed to work so RV owners can figure out what’s wrong regardless of the brand.

“The PRO course is all about saving time and saving money. Owners do not want their RVs sitting at a dealership for a month or two waiting for something to be repaired, when the owner could fix it themselves ,” he added.

NRVTA developed the PRO program because some RV owners may not have the time or ability to attend a live RV Fundamentals class at the Big Red School House, said Tony Flammia, director of sales and marketing.

“However, if someone buys the PRO program and later wishes to attend a live class, NRVTA includes a $300 credit with each home-study course to help cover the cost of tuition,” he explained. “The live course remains the best way for RV owners to increase knowledge and build confidence to start fixing their own RVs.”

The PRO program is a comprehensive and self-paced online course which offers invaluable insight, practical tips and step-by-step instructions to empower RV owners, said Flammia. The videos and PDFs are accessible in the NRVTA student portal.

“Whether owners are beginners or have some experience, this course is tailored to meet their needs and take RV ownership skills to the next level,” he added. “Owners will also gain invaluable knowledge on RV safety, best practices and tips on how to maximize the lifespan of an RV investment.”
