Nightmare Fuel: Man Falls into Abandoned Mine Shaft in Utah

A Utah man fell about 50 feet into an abandoned mine shaft in Utah last week. Iron County Search and Rescue shared photos and information about the rescue on its Facebook page. The victim survived the fall but sustained “substantial head trauma.”

Iron County Search and Rescue says on November 4, the technical ropes rescue team received a call for help. Helicopters and SAR (search-and-rescue) personnel dispatched to the scene, and a deputy with the Iron County Sheriff’s Office made contact with the man who had fallen and began talking with him.

“Once the ropes team arrived on scene, they immediately descended down the mine shaft and made visual contact with the victim,” the SAR organization says. “It was apparent to the rescuer that the victim had sustained substantial head trauma, and was in an altered state. An additional rescue was lowered to assist and they were able to place the patient in the litter and raise him out of the mine.”

An ambulance took the patient to a medical facility for treatment once he was out of the mine. There is no additional information about the victim at this time. Various reports identify his age as late 40s or early 50s.
