New Zealand’s ‘Romotow’ Brings Rotating Towable to Market

It’s never easy bringing a new product to the marketplace. Sometimes it never happens, and a prototype is all that remains of a company’s vision. At other times, the limitations of production demand changes that significantly downgrade many of the characteristics that made the product so noteworthy to begin with.

Neither of those results can be applied to the Romotow, although it’s been an undeniably long process to bring the unique RV to the public. As reported by newatlas.com, the rotating glamping RV is now available for pre-order — and those lucky enough to snag one will have one of the most unusual travel trailer designs to come down the pike in years.

RVBusiness first reported on the Romotow in 2015. At the time, company executives of Romotow Holdings Ltd. displayed a scale model of the trailer at the National RV Show in Louisville, Ky., and were said to be in talks with North American RV manufacturers to build it stateside. What became of those discussions isn’t known, but according to newatlas.com the company’s first efforts are intended for the New Zealand and Australian markets.

Shaped not unlike a thumb drive, the Romotow — created by the architecture and design firm W2 Ltd. and now manufactured by ACM Motorhomes — is a 30.5-foot, 7,495-pound GVWR travel trailer that features an open deck which envelopes the trailer during travel but employs an automated hydraulic system to swivel out 90 degrees campside to create a completely covered deck in less than 60 seconds. A second automated system levels the trailer when set up.

The main cabin, which sleeps four to six people, includes a roomy dining area forward surrounded by wraparound windows, choice of two galley designs, an L-shaped dry bath and rear bedroom.

Aside from its unique shape, however, it’s the patio which sets the Romotow apart from the crowd. The curved and covered space features composite teak-look flooring and paneling, along with removable canvas/mesh sidewalls should it be necessary to keep out pests or inclement weather.

Designed around a mild steel chassis, the Romotow features an aluminum structure and insulated composite sidewalls, roof and flooring. It’s powered by a 200-AH lithium battery charged by a 395-watt solar array and utilizes an integrated control system.

Of course, some things have changed since our original report. Initially expected to retail for about $150,000, the Romotow now carries a $268,500 MSRP — but what price can you place on being the most unique travel trailer at any campground you visit?
