ND Hoops Coach Shrewsbury Discusses ‘Full Circle’ Journey – RVBusiness – Breaking RV Industry News
ELKHART, Ind. – Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry spoke at the 2024 RV Power Breakfast this morning, sharing his coaching journey that he said was “almost full circle.”
“As a kid growing up in Indianapolis, I never would’ve thought it was possible for me to be a coach at Notre Dame,” he said.
But he said he thought he could be a head coach at age 30 and that’s where his career started at Indiana University-South Bend.
“My path began with failure—I was there two years and we were wildly unsuccessful — it’s not like Notre Dame was looking down the street saying, ‘That dude’s going to be our next coach,’” he laughed.
He shared that he had to take a step or two backwards to go forward.
Shrewsberry shared a few life lessons along the way, and that was the first — take a step backward.
Life lesson two was “Forget what you learned” sharing when he went from college basketball to NBA it was like a foreign language.
And lesson three was “Always believe in yourself.”
Shrewsberry shared when he decided he wanted to go back to being a college head coach, where he failed before, he was getting a lot of no’s. So he had to take a step backwards again and start as an assistant coach.
Lesson four was “Stick to the plan — even when it looks bleak and you don’t know what’s next.”
He got a position as head coach at Penn State and turned that program around.
When he arrived at Notre Dame last spring he had three team members.
“I almost had to call Rick (Kessler),” he joked.
But he said he is sticking to the plan of how to build it, no matter what others say.
He concluded by saying his full circle moment will be complete when he “brings the Fighting Irish back to the NCAA tournament, which will be soon,” adding he hoped everyone there would remember his telling them that today.
