Montana Electrifies Shed To Keep Huge Grizzly Away

Earlier this year, the state of Montana shared pictures of a huge grizzly bear using a shed as a scratch pad. At the time, officials wanted to point out just how big grizzlies are.

Jump ahead to this week, officials followed up with another public announcement, explaining that the Montana Fish, Wildlife & Parks worked with the property owner to build an electric fence around the shed.

“Proactive measures, such as this one, teach bears to avoid human structures keeping people safe and reducing the need for management removal of bears,” the agency said on Facebook

The agency explained when the bear rubs on a particular spot, it leaves behind a scent to make its presence known to other bears.

The electric fence will ideally deter the bear from further using the 67-inch tall shed for scratching. In turn, the effort will prevent bears from approaching other human structures and reduce human and bear interactions.

“While this massive grizzly bear had a good scratch, it is important to prevent further conflicts with humans and structures,” the agency said.
