NOMINATIONS SOUGHT FOR OUTDOOR NEWS PERSON OF THE YEAR AWARD
Plymouth, Minn. — Outdoor News once again is seeking nominations for its annual Person of the Year Award. We’re looking for people who have worked on behalf of hunting, fishing, and conservation in the state of Minnesota. Recent recipients have included Jim Sable, Arlen Schamber, Ray Gildow, Ruth Hoefs, Dave Pauly, and Craig DeJong.
Although most recipients are selected for their conservation achievements over a lifetime, we’ll consider citizens who’ve made remarkable contributions in the past year, too.
For the initial nomination, we don’t need extensive information – just a name and some basic background about why a state sportsman or woman deserves recognition.

APPLY FOR A-SEASON TURKEY PERMITS FOR CARLOS AVERY OR WHITEWATER WMAS BY FEB. 21
St. Paul — Turkey hunters have through Friday, Feb. 21, to apply for turkey-hunting permits for the A spring hunting season in Carlos Avery or Whitewater wildlife management areas. There will be 30 permits available for Carlos Avery WMA and 150 permits for Whitewater WMA.
In addition to a turkey license, a permit is required for those hoping to bag a tom turkey via firearm in either of these WMAs during the A season. Turkey firearms permits for these WMAs are distributed via a lottery system for the A season. While a license is required for all seasons, hunters do not need permits to hunt Carlos Avery or Whitewater WMAs during the B, C, D, E, or F seasons. In addition, this year a permit will no longer be required for firearms hunters during any season to hunt Mille Lacs WMA, but a license is still required.
Turkey licenses will go on sale March 1 for several hunting seasons from mid-April to the end of May, with the A season kicking off on Wednesday, April 16. Crossbows may be used by all hunters with an archery turkey license.

WILDLIFE FOREVER TO LAUNCH NEW PROJECT IN RED RIVER VALLEY
White Bear Lake, Minn. — Wildlife Forever and the United Prairie Foundation have launched a new program that connects students and the community to an outdoor educational prairie classroom on school grounds. Funding from the state’s Board of Water and Soil Resources will help develop the Educational Prairie Trail program at the Dilworth-Glyndon-Felton School in Glyndon.
“This partnership between United Prairie Foundation, Wildlife Forever, DGF, and BWSR will create an active space for learning about prairie and pollinators, their habitat needs, and ecological benefits for the community,” said Pat Conzemius, president and CEO of Wildlife Forever.
The Educational Prairie Trail project is the first nongovernmental organization-funded project from BWSR. The project will restore four acres of native prairie on the school grounds, including student-planted gardens and native trees and shrub plantings.
A new educational curriculum will also be developed to engage students in the study of prairie ecosystems, conservation, and sustainable land stewardship.
For more information about the Educational Prairie Trail project, contact Patrice Delaney, senior biologist, United Prairie Foundation, at (218) 443-0453 or [email protected]
