Michigan Outdoor News scribe gets award at AGLOW – Outdoor News

Midland, Mich. — Michigan Outdoor News field editor and freelance writer Steve Griffin was awarded second place in the book category of the Association of Great Lakes Outdoor Writers annual Awards in Craft competition.

The awards were announced during AGLOW’s annual conference in Kentucky Lake, Ky.

Griffin’s entry was “Ice Fishing: Guide to Great Techniques for Catching Walleye, Pike, Perch, Trout, and Panfish,” a 2024 Stackpole Books revision of his 1985 “Ice Fishing: Methods & Magic,” also a Stackpole publication.

The new edition, while retaining the essays and stories of the original, also traces the many areas – shelter, clothing, electronics, augers, rods, reels and other tackle – that have carried the once homespun pastime to its increasingly popular and accessible present.

Wrote the contest judge, “Rarely does a book seamlessly blend entertaining and informative information. Steve has imparted vital, life-saving information in a style that makes the reader want to turn to the next page.”

Griffin was also awarded AGLOW’s Golden Glow award Excellence in Craft, for his long and productive career as an outdoors writer.

Griffin, a Midland native, has been a full-time freelancer since 1975, and a columnist and contributor to Michigan Outdoor News since its inception in 2000.
