Latest Purem Heater Optimizes Exhaust Gas Aftertreatment

ESSLINGEN, Germany – With its Euro 7 draft, the EU Commission has further tightened the emissions limits. Different emissions legislations govern pollutant emissions in various parts of the world. With its latest generation of EHC Fractal Heaters, Purem by Eberspaecher offers an innovative solution for Clean Mobility. Series production of this in-house development will begin in 2024.

Tightened limits for nitrogen oxides, carbon monoxides, particles, and other pollutants: not only in Europe but all over the world, strict legislations now apply. Examples include the emissions standards of the EPA, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) standards in the US, and the stricter emissions regulations that will apply in future in China.

In all of these, the limits for passenger cars and commercial vehicles have one thing in common: they place high demands on emission control systems. The answer from Purem by Eberspaecher is the latest generation of the EHC Fractal Heater: an innovative electrical heating component that increases the efficiency of exhaust emission conversion in the cold-start phase and low-load range. It enables more than 90 percent of pollutants to be reduced.

Optimized heating elements

The EHC Fractal Heater features heating elements that have been further optimized in both shape and structure. The heating surface has been tripled – while thermal mass has been reduced. This ensures a faster and better heating of the downstream catalytic converter and guarantees efficient exhaust gas aftertreatment. Emissions of pollutants are reduced right from the start of the journey.

Thanks to the optimized surface structure, the prevailing backpressure on the engine is also reduced, which has a positive impact on fuel consumption. Since the component is electrically operated, no additional fuel linked to an ignition source is necessary. The flexible construction of the EHC Fractal Heater makes it scalable in terms of size, shape, and output: it offers a high heat output of 4 to 6.5 kW for passenger car applications and up to 10 kW for commercial vehicles. The heating element can be adapted to customer requirements – and can be used in almost all vehicle classes and in a wide range of exhaust gas aftertreatment systems, in conjunction with either metal or ceramic catalytic converters. In mass production the EHC Fractal Heater will be available from 2024.

Focusing on customer needs

The development cycles for the EHC Fractal Heater are arranged close to the needs of the market. This is confirmed by the large number of customer inquiries about solutions from the Active Heating program from Purem by Eberspaecher. Notable automotive manufacturers rely on the many years of expertise of the exhaust technology specialist from Esslingen am Neckar for their compliance with pollutant emissions limits. Global customer nominations for the EHC Fractal Heater send a clear message. With its product strategy, Purem by Eberspaecher is pursuing the goal of clean and quiet mobility.
