A viral video shows a lone kayaker amidst a feeding frenzy of Atlantic bluefin tuna. Despite the fishes’ massive size and aggressive behavior, he doesn’t even flinch. Rupert Kirkwood is a blogger and wildlife enthusiast who spends a great deal of time paddling around the coast of southwest England in his kayak. As he goes, Kirkwood observes and photographs wildlife.

In December, Kirkwood found himself in the middle of the action, and his filmmaker son was on shore recording the whole thing. In the video, you see Kirkwood in his kayak as huge tuna leap from the water in pursuit of their meal.

Henry Kirkwood (Rubert’s son) shared the video to Instagram, saying:

@thelonekayaker and I had a truly mind-blowing encounter as these gigantic predators chased down Garfish. [. . .] Dad was in an extremely vulnerable position on the ocean, sitting in his kayak among the hungry Tuna.”

On his blog, Rubert Kirkwood wrote:

“Looking back on it, maybe it wasn’t a good idea to be sitting in that particular location, with the risk of being hit by a 300kg [660-pound] projectile flying at 30mph.”
