MIDDLEBURY, Ind. – RV manufacturer Jayco cut the ribbon on its new Family Care Clinic at 109 W. U.S. 20, Middlebury, on Monday (Jan. 9), making it the first RV OEM in Elkhart County to offer such a facility to its employees and their families.

For roughly 15 years, Jayco – a THOR Industries Inc. subsidiary – has offered occupational health and fitness services to its employees. The addition of the Family Care Clinic – and expansions and renovations to the occupational health and fitness areas – completes the wellness picture, said Trey Miller, Jayco vice president of marketing.

“So, if you think about it, you have preventative care, which is the fitness center, you have the occupational care if you’re injured on the job, and now you have the health clinic for your family if somebody gets sick,” he said.

The Family Care Clinic – operating in partnership with Goshen Health – offers care exclusively to Jayco employees and their families. The project was completed by DJ Construction, of Goshen, Ind.

“We’ve been talking about adding this type of facility for about 10 years and finally really got serious about it over the last two or three,” said Jayco president and CEO Ken Walters following the ribbon cutting.

Walters said the idea for a family clinic was born out of a desire to “invest back into our people and to attract and retain talent. And the ‘investing in the family’ part of that is the biggest deal,” he said.

“I love the result. I love what we’re doing on the workers comp side, continuing with the occupational health stuff. I love the family clinic being able to service our team and their families – being able to bring their families here instead of waiting at the ER or waiting at the urgent care. The fitness center is the same thing; just a really big investment in our people.”

Walters said the only other entity providing the same type of program in Elkhart County is Goshen Community Schools, which also is partnered with Goshen Health.

“We’re the only RV company in the county that’s doing it, for sure. Airstream has a comparable clinic in Jackson Center, Ohio,” Walters noted.

“We’re really, really, really proud of this,” he said. “It took a lot of hard work to get this done.”

Miller added, “There are three things we are really focusing on at Jayco – that’s quality, employee relations and dealer relations. Those are the big three things we consistently are focusing on as a company.”

A new PDI facility was completed earlier this year and programs aimed at improving dealer relations are in the works, Miller said.

“This holistic health care facility, which has preventative, occupational and family care – this really focuses on that employee piece. Our big initiatives are going to be either employee focused, dealer focused or quality focused and we consistently are looking to improve on all those things,” he said. “This is just another piece of that.”

Company philosophy aside, Miller said the facility will offer employees a new level of convenience and health care availability.

“Employees and their families can come here all week long, on Saturdays or evenings, and get health care for a reduced price. It’s a real nice alternative. They come right here with no appointment, get right in and get seen,” he said. “We provide the building, obviously, and they (Goshen Health) provide the doctors, nurses and so forth.”

The fitness center has been expanded.

Jon Yoder, vice president of Goshen Health, said his organization has had a long-running relationship with Jayco through its occupational health clinic, “so when they came to us and asked, ‘How do we do preventative care?’ and ‘How do we extend that to not just our employees, but their families?’ we were super excited to start that conversation.”

He said the concept was two years in the making and he hopes it can continue to grow throughout Elkhart County.

“Our mission at Goshen Health is to improve the health of our community,” he said. “How do we do that? We are always open to having these conversations and starting to partner with employers in the community makes a lot of sense. They value keeping their employees healthy and keeping them in the workplace. So, providing convenient access for them, creating office hours and high-quality care in a place the employees already know. It just makes a lot of sense.”

Currently, Goshen Health has 29 clinics spread across four counties, Yoder said, making the organization well positioned to offer the type of partnership it has with Jayco to other businesses.

Matt Schrock, vice president of DJ Construction, said his firm has had a long relationship with both Jayco and Goshen Health, so it was natural fit for them to do the project which took about seven months complete.

“It was really their brainchild, not ours, to do this project, and it was really great to see these two community organizations come together with both of them working together to make it happen,” he said.
