Jason Momoa: ‘DO NOT TRAVEL TO MAUI’

Aquaman star and The Climb host Jason Momoa warned travelers not to visit the island of Maui amid the deadliest wildfire in the history of the United States.

“Do not convince yourself that your presence is needed on an island that is suffering this deeply,” Momoa wrote on Instagram.

As of Tuesday, the wildfires have killed 99 people and destroyed more than 1,500 structures, causing an estimated $10 billion in property damages. Plus, government officials say hundreds of people are still missing.

In a series of video clips, Momoa explained in writing that the wildfires have impacted Maui’s resources and if travelers visit, those resources will become even more scarce.

Several groups — like the American Hotel & Lodging Association — are working with hotels and airlines in the area to prioritize displaced residents.

Experts say they don’t exactly know how the fires started, but they do say that it’s the combination of drought and hurricane weather that’s caused them to be so severe.

Although Momoa was raised in Iowa, he was born in Honolulu, Hawaii and moved back to attend the University of Hawaii.
