‘I Risked My Life for This’: Man Wins Cheese-Rolling Race Again

A beloved but dangerous tradition in Gloucestershire challenges participants to race down a steep hill, chasing a rolling wheel of cheese. The first person to the cheese in each heat wins. But it’s not as easy as it may sound. The hill is very steep, sending some participants flying . . . and others to the hospital.
The “world-famous” Gloucestershire cheese-rolling race occurs annually on Cooper’s Hill near Gloucester in the U.K. The competition took place at the end of May this year, and the first men’s downhill winner was Tom Kopke, who also won a men’s downhill race last year.

In a media interview, Kopke, who is a German YouTuber, said: “All the people there at the top said they’re going to steal my title, but this is mine. I worked for this. I risked my life for this. It’s my cheese!”
Kopke had a smile on his face as he said those words, proudly pointing to the huge cheese wheel that he apparently now gets to keep. The tradition has a long, long history, extending back to the 1800s.
