Hikers Spot Rare Herd of Animals Outside Los Angeles

A group of fortunate hikers spotted a rare herd of bighorn sheep just outside of Los Angeles in California’s San Gabriel Mountains. Bighorn sheep live in rugged, mountainous terrain in places like Rocky Mountain National Park, Yellowstone National Park, Grand Canyon National Park, and beyond. The San Gabriel Mountains are home to these wild sheep, too, but they’re shy creatures, and it’s not common to see them there.

“Deep in the backcountry these animals find a home nestled in the forests north of the city,” wrote LA Hikes in an Instagram post sharing multiple photos of the herd. “They are a rare sight for any hiker due to their shy and elusive nature. To find so many at one time is a rare and difficult phenomenon to capture. As we sat there for over half an hour watching these animals do their thing on the cliffs opposite of ours, it was a treat to capture. Enjoy these photos from a glimpse of these animals that are located so close to the city.”
