Have You Heard of This Rare Animal? See a Cascade Red Fox

Cascade red foxes live in Washington State’s southern Cascades, particularly in Mount Rainier National Park and some wilderness areas within Gifford Pinchot National Forest. The Center for Biological Diversity recently shared a video of this rare animal, which a National Park Service (NPS) ranger spotted in the wild.

In the video, a unique-colored fox trots toward the camera, then veers up a small hill. The camera person continues to film the rare animal as it goes up and around the human, then leaps back onto the trail and runs off into the distance.

The Center for Biological Diversity says the Cascade red fox comes in three different color phases—red, black, and a cross between the two colors. These elusive creatures also have bushy, white-tipped tails. The foxes once lived throughout the northern Cascades as well as the southern Cascades, but climate change has pushed them out of about half of their historic range.
