Former Sportscoach President David Olson Dies at Age 83
Longtime RV career man David Charles Olson, 83, of Elkhart, Ind., former president of Coachmen Industries’ Sportscoach division, died Nov. 13.
He was born on April 30, 1939, in Saint Louis Park, Minn., to Reuben Selmer Olson and Agnes Carene (Peterson) Olson. On June 15th, 1968, He married Mary Margaret Houg. Their marriage lasted over 53 years until Mary’s death on August 23, 2021.
The couple are survived by three daughters, three daughters, nine grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren.
Known as “Big D” to many of his peer and customers, he loved the RV world he worked in for most of his life. Throughout the 70s and 80s, he worked for some of the biggest names in the RV or automotive world, including Chrysler, American Motors, Winnebago in the Itaska Division and Airstream. In 1982, the Olson family moved to Elkhart, Ind., the RV capitol of the world. He worked for Sportscoach, where he served as president, Mallard and finally, Damon and Thor Motor Coach.
Visitation is planned from 11 a.m. to 1 pm. Saturday (Nov. 19) at Grace Lutheran Church, 831 W. Marion St, Elkhart, Ind. 46516, where a funeral service will be conducted at 1 p.m.
Memorial contributions in his name may be made to Grace Lutheran Church where the Olson’s were members for over 35 years.
