Ford Introduces Transit Trail Camper Van Platform

After teasing an updated version of the Transit van a few weeks back, Ford has officially taken the wraps off the latest model of that iconic vehicle. As expected, the new Transit Trail comes with a set of features designed to appeal specifically to RVers, overlanders, and vanlifers. Those include all-wheel drive (AWD), improved ground clearance, and more rugged construction.

The Transit Trail will ship from the factory as a mostly blank slate, but it is expected to serve as the underpinnings for numerous Class B camper vans. Manufacturers who opt to build their RVs on the Transit platform will find the vehicle now comes with an enhanced suspension that gives it 3.5 inches more ground clearance than previous models. It also rides on 30.5-inch Goodyear Wrangler Workhorse tires, which, when paired with the new AWD system, make it a capable off-roader.

Other enhancements include durable plastic fender flares, splash guards, and a skid plate to help protect the undercarriage. Rock slider-style side steps offer further protection and make it easier for passengers to get in and out of the vehicle. The Transit Trail even comes with marker lamps and a rugged grill—items often added through aftermarket accessory manufacturers.

RV manufacturers and vanlifers will find the Transit Trail comes with plenty of features designed to make their lives easier. For instance, the vehicle ships with pre-drilled mounting points for cabinets, shelving units, and other accessories. It also has built-in LTE/Wi-Fi networking with support for up to ten devices. The optional Upfitters Package upgrades power inside and out, adding an auxiliary fuse box, high-capacity switches, a 400-watt AC inverter, and two 12-volt batteries. Ford will even install a roof-mounted air conditioner straight from the factory if requested.

The Trail Transit uses Ford’s tried and true 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6 engine, paired with a ten-speed automatic transmission, that produces 310 horsepower. The Van’s AWD system gives drivers five modes to choose from, including Normal, Eco, Mud/Ruts, Tow/Haul, and Slippery. And since it can tow up to 6,500 pounds, owners can bring all their favorite toys with them on their adventures.
