Enjoy Natural Camping Along the Banks of Colorado’s Roaring Fork River
At about 8,200 feet of elevation, Difficult Campground is the perfect home base when exploring the scenic surrounding areas of Aspen, Colorado. Featuring 47 sites, Difficult Campground is a no-frills U.S. Forest Service campground with limited amenities. Its main draws are solitude and scenery. And, believe us, they’re both spectacular.
Located in the White River National Forest, Difficult Campground offers a picturesque setting. It’s located five miles southeast of Aspen along the banks of the Roaring Fork River. Vehicles longer than 35 feet are prohibited over Independence Pass, but access is permitted via Aspen. The 2024 season runs from May 10–September 28. Rates are $32 per night, with an additional $2 surcharge on holidays. Difficult Campground has a five-day maximum stay policy.
A popular attraction located in the heart of Aspen is the John Denver Sanctuary. Named for the late singer, the sanctuary is the largest perennial flower garden in the area. It attracts visitors from all over the world. The John Denver Sanctuary is adjacent to Theater Aspen. The popular theater company provides live stage entertainment throughout the summer months.
Get Outdoors near Difficult Campground
Fly-fishing is a huge draw to the area, but golfing is equally as popular in Aspen. A favorite of many golfers is the 18-hole Aspen Golf Club. It sounds quite regal, but is actually a municipal golf course. Don’t be fooled by the ‘municipal’ label. The beautiful par-71 course measures 7,165 yards from the back tees. Water features in on 14 of 18 holes. This parkland-style course is one of the longest municipal courses in the state. During winter months, the course transforms into cross-country ski trails.
While exploring the town of Aspen, be sure to visit Hotel Jerome. The historic hotel dates to 1889. Don’t miss the underground bar and lounge, Bad Harriet, that’s named after hotel founder Jerome B. Wheeler’s wife.
