Elkhart County, Ind., Unemployment Rate Drops to 3.8%
The unemployment rate in the area dropped to 3.8 percent in February, down from 4.9 percent in January, according to the Indiana Department of Workforce Development show. The agency released local, non-seasonally adjusted figures on Monday.
The monthly rate was higher than the benchmark rate of 2.3 percent recorded in February 2022.
In January, Elkhart-Goshen had the highest unemployment rate among the 13 metropolitan statistical areas in Indiana. In February, it was lower than six other areas but still above the state and national rates for the month, according to government figures.
The size of the workforce declined from 188,556 in February 2022 to 116,717 in February this year. The number looking for work also declined, from 115,807 in February 2022 to 112,279 last month.
Mike Huber, the director of development services for the city of Elkhart, said he believes it’s a good sign for unemployment rates to be low, adding that it means that the local economy is strong and producing at a high level.
“I think what we’re seeing is the industry here is pretty strong and we’ve had a pretty tight demand for labor here for some time,” he said. “I think there were some concerns about the RV industry, but the RV industry seems to be employing at a high level if those numbers are going down.”
