Ditch the Concrete And Go Off-Roading This OHV Safety Week
The road trip is as synonymous with American culture as apple pie and corndogs. The idea of big open roads and endless adventure has been mainstream for nearly 100 years. However, you can explore further into the backcountry by going off-roading with an OHV.

An OHV, which stands for off-highway vehicle, includes dirt bikes, ATVs, and UTVs (side-by-sides). These vehicles are not meant for the road and, in many cases, they are illegal to drive down the street. However, these recreational vehicles are a great way to go further into the backcountry than ever before.
People use OHVs nationwide, but they’re most popular in the West. Places like Utah and Arizona are home to many off-roading trails. California has an especially large amount of dirt roads in the desert areas, and this upcoming week, they’re pushing OHV safety.
The Golden State holds the week semi-annually, with the latest running from November 11 to 19. This time around, the theme is “Be Off-Road Heroes.”
“Being a hero usually exemplifies the best qualities in all of us,” said California State Parks Off-Highway Motor Vehicle Recreation Division Chief Callan McLaughlin in a press release. “To ‘Be the Off-Road Hero’ really means to be the example and set the standard for others to follow while recreating safely and responsibly in our beautiful off-highway vehicle areas.”
Unfortunately, OHV-related deaths happen every year. Increased attention to the issue came in 2019 when six deaths occurred at Oceano Dunes State Park, a popular off-roading destination. Local media reports that the park saw 46 deaths from OHV accidents between 1992 and June 2019.
To keep everyone safe while enjoying the outdoors, the State of California is pushing these safety measures:
- Be Visible: Use a whip and flag, wear high-visibility clothing, and practice trail etiquette.
- Suit up: Wear a properly fitted helmet, chest protector, knee guards, and all recommended safety equipment.
- Educate Yourself on Off-Roading: Take a FREE safety class, which can help you become a more experienced rider.
