A resident of Cypress, Texas got a shock when her doorbell camera went off, and it wasn’t a salesperson, a neighbor, or a package delivery. In fact, it was a large snake that had triggered the doorbell cam. Needless to say, the woman didn’t answer the door, and she admits that seeing the snake slither down her wall gave her the chills.

“Knock, knock, NOPE! This rat snake triggered a Cypress family’s Ring doorbell camera,” wrote local KHOU 11 News in a Facebook post sharing the doorbell-cam footage. “With temperatures rising, everyone is looking for ways to beat the heat, including snakes!”

Rat snakes are nonvenomous and use constriction to capture and kill their prey, which is mostly rodents. Texas rat snakes are common in the state, and that might be what showed up at this woman’s house.

Texas rat snakes can be over 7 feet long, although most are 3-6 feet. They’re excellent climbers and can climb “straight up a brick wall.” Another name for these animals are “chicken snakes,” since they like to go after chicken eggs.
