Camping New Jersey: The 10 Best Campgrounds Around Jersey for 2023

Although New Jersey is one of the smallest states in the country, you wouldn’t know it with the vast beautiful landscapes. It’s not called “The Garden State” for nothing. With that said, there are state parks, national reserves, and private campsites all over the state. If camping New Jersey is your thing, here are the 10 best campgrounds around the state.

Round Valley Recreation Area includes the amazing Round Valley Reservoir and the Cushetunk Mountains. It’s over 2,000 acres of the national park with four campgrounds offering over 210 sites.

The location is amazing but only accessible on foot or via the water. That means no RVs but tents are more than welcome. It’s green, lush, forested, and a lovely place to spend time. There’s a beach, and lifeguards at peak times too.

It is close to Clinton and I-78 so is easy to get to. You’ll need to hike to the campgrounds though.

Mays Landing Campground is ideal if you want to camp with your RV. It’s more accessible than Round Valley and close to Atlantic City, so you’ll always have something to do.

The campground accepts tents and RVs and has hookups, a fishing pond, a playground, activities, sports, laundry, and a store. It’s a well-managed ground that’s a step away from rustic and closer to enjoying the park.

The campground is just south of Philadelphia and east of Vineland and easily reachable by road.

Atlantic Shore Pines Campground is a family-run campground in the New Jersey Pine Barrens, southeast of Philadelphia by Bass River. It’s a great place that welcomes tents and RVs just a 30-minute drive from Atlantic City.

The campground has hookups for RVs, water, cabins and lodges, WiFi, restrooms, a dog park, showers, a convenience store, a bar, and laundry. It’s a well-run campground that attracts a lot of families.

The campground also runs activities and events but has secluded spaces if you want to just relax.

High Point State Park

High Point State Park is mainly for tents and, thanks to its elevation by the Kittatinny Mountains in Sussex County, offers stunning views of New Jersey. It’s within a state park so you’ll be surrounded by nature, trees, wilderness, wildlife, and everything you need to leave the world behind for a while.

The campground welcomes tents and also has cabins to rent. There’s a laundry, park office, boat launch, and rental, fishing, picnic areas, playground, basic restrooms, and plenty to see and do.

The park is just south of Port Jervis by I-84 and the New York and New Jersey border. It’s very easy to get to.

Sun Retreats Pleasant Acres Farm is a little different as it’s a working farm that offers a campground. It’s an interesting proposition and provides something different from the usual national parks or private campgrounds.

It is located by High Point State Park, close to the New York and New Jersey border. It’s accessible by vehicle and welcomes RVs, trailers, and tents. There are also homes for sale or rent too. 

The site has tons of amenities including a petting zoo, pool, WiFi, sports areas, restrooms, hookups, and more.

Bass River State Forest offers a lakeshore campground and beach camping within verdant green surroundings. It offers mainly lean-tos for tents or sleeping in the open rather than RVs, which adds a unique twist.

The campground is ideal for hiking, biking, fishing, hunting, swimming, picnics, wildlife and just spending time with nature. Restrooms, showers, and a food concession are currently under construction and should be completed by the end of 2023.

The forest is close to the Atlantic coast by the Garden State Parkway and is easily accessible by car.

Delaware River Family Campground

The Delaware River Family Campground is a firm favorite with families wanting to camp in NJ. It’s on the New Jersey side of the Delaware River by Highway 46 northeast of Allentown. It’s easy to get to and convenient for I-80.

The campground has games areas, sports courts, a boat launch, miniature golf, river fishing, a heated pool, a kiddie pool, and space for RVs and tents. The ground also rents cabins and luxury tents if you don’t want to bring your own.

Delaware River Family Campground is a short drive from a range of attractions in the area so it’s easy to find things to do if you need to.

Beachcomber Camping Resort is on Shore Road by Cape May and is ideal for exploring this fascinating part of the country. There’s a beach all around and space for RVs, tents, groups, and even seasonal rentals on site.

This is another family-friendly campground but it has an adults-only clubhouse for those times you need a little peace and quiet. 

There are also a couple of pools, lots of beaches, a snack shop, access to the ocean and rivers, and plenty more besides. Well worth checking out if you want to camp by the beach.

Buena Vista Campground is set up mainly for RVs and has sites surrounded by lakes, ponds, trees, and green space. It’s an idyllic place to leave the world behind and is very popular with families.

The campground also rents cabins if you don’t have an RV. The site itself has a pool, picnic area, hookups, basic restroom facilities, access to a lake and ponds, and regular entertainment.

It is located just outside Buena, south of Philadelphia along Highway 40 so is easy to get to from anywhere in New Jersey.

Parvin State Park is in Pittsgrove, southwest of Wilmington close to the 55. It’s a very relaxed, scenic campground on the shores of Lake Parvin and offers fishing, swimming, hiking, biking, canoeing, or boating.

The park is well-run as you would expect, with well-tended grounds, picnic areas, firepits, a children’s playground, and access to two lakes. There are basic restrooms and showers on site too.

Parvin State Park is tent-friendly and has space for RVs and trailers. There are cabins to rent too if you prefer to travel light.
