It took rescue crews nine hours to extract an 11-year-old boy stuck between two house-sized boulders. The boy had been exploring near a school in New Hampshire on Sunday evening when the accident occurred. The rescue was so difficult that officials said they’d never seen anything like it.

Local WMUR News reports that the boy was walking on top of the boulders near Wediko School in Hillsborough when he slipped on sticks and debris. He became stuck between the boulders with his legs dangling and could not free himself. The Hillsborough Fire Department told WMUR that the boulders were much too large to move.

Firefighters used “dish soap and thin pieces of plastic” to try to reduce the friction, but WMUR reports that accessing the boy was extremely difficult.

“We needed to essentially tunnel from the side using jackhammers, using (reciprocating saws), shovels, create some space to get a member underneath him in order to free up his legs, and once that was done, the guys on top and from below were able to lift [the boy] up and out,” Manchester Capt. Adam Iverson told WMUR.

Thankfully, although officials took the boy to the hospital, medical professionals released him after evaluation. Well done to these rescue professionals who definitely had their work cut out for them.
