BougeRV 2000W Pure Sine Wave Inverter: An Easy Power Upgrade

Booking.com

With all of the delicate electronic devices we travel with today, it has never been more important to have clean electricity available in our RVs. After all, none of us wants our shiny new smartphone or laptop to short-circuit due to a power surge or unregulated energy flow. Thankfully, thanks to the adoption of pure sine wave inverters, that isn’t much of an issue these days. In fact, most RVs come with one of these devices already installed. But if you’re upgrading the power system in an older rig, adding additional solar panels, or renovating a camper van, adding a new inverter is always a good idea.

Recently, we had the chance to test one such inverter from BougeRV, a company that has been rapidly expanding its RV and overlapping portfolio in recent years. The brand first made its mark by introducing well-equipped and affordable power stations and has since gone on to add powered coolers, outdoor appliances, solar panels, and camp lighting solutions to its catalog. However, perhaps its most intriguing offering to date is the company’s new line of inverters, which come in 1000W, 2000W, and 3000W capacities.

Our test model was the 2000W 12V Pure Sine Wave Inverter with Bluetooth model, which is the sweet spot for offering plenty of capacity and functionality at a price that is really tough to beat.

Power Up

BougeRV’s 2000W inverter comes with an impressive set of specs. As its name implies, it can produce a sustained output of up to 2000 watts of power, with peak performance reaching as much as 4000W if needed. It offers an output voltage of 110VAC/120VAC at a frequency of 50/60Hz. The device can operate successfully in temperatures ranging from -40ºF to 185ºF and comes with built-in low-voltage protection, input overload protection, over-voltage protection, and short circuit protection. It even has lithium battery soft startup protection, which greatly increases its compatibility with a broader range of lithium power cells.

All of those features are designed to allow the inverter to offer maximum performance and safety when supplying clean energy to electronic devices, appliances, and other electrical systems. Built-in 15A and 20A 120V outlets and a USB-A port make tapping into all of that performance a breeze. The inverter’s built-in twin fans also help keep its components cool and running efficiently, even when operating under a heavier load.

Our test unit also came with wireless Bluetooth connectivity, making it easy to monitor and adjust settings remotely from a smartphone. This feature worked well, but we didn’t find it to be an essential part of the package. However, those of you who do like to keep a close eye on system performance may disagree. Keep in mind, not all of BougeRV’s inverters include this technology, so be sure to purchase the one that includes it in the description.

What’s in the Box?

BougeRV ships its inverters with everything you need to get them installed and running properly. In addition to the device itself, you’ll also get three 50A fuses, three 40A fuses, and all the cables you’ll need to connect the inverter to your rig. You’ll also get a remote control/display panel connected to a 19.7′ cord, along with a user manual to help get you started.

The display is simple but effective. The screen itself is small but manages to squeeze a lot of info into its limited real estate. It shows voltage in and out, output power and frequency, battery levels, and when the inverter’s various protection features are active. It also has buttons for turning the system on and off, switching between 110V and 120V, and activating a backlight that makes it easier to read in the dark. Connecting the monitor is as simple as plugging it into the inverter and doesn’t require any special wiring.

Installation

Installation of the BougeRV inverter couldn’t be any easier. As noted above, the unit comes with all of the necessary connecting cables, including a ground wire. All you have to do is simply match the color-coded cables with their corresponding terminals on the inverter itself and then connect them to the battery you’ll be using to supply the power. You’ll need to be mindful of properly hooking up to the negative and positive posts, of course, but other than that, it is a very straightforward and easy affair.

If you’re installing the inverter in your RV, the included cables may be shorter than you’d like, depending on where the device and the batteries are placed. In that case, it is easy enough to replace them with longer aftermarket cords that will provide a little more flexibility in placement. The inverter has built in mountain bracket that makes it easy to lock into place, and connecting to the remote display is very easy, thanks to a designated port and its very long cable.

After installation is complete, a power switch on the inverter turns the unit off and on, with a power light illuminating to indicate it is working properly. A red fault light will activate if something is amiss with the device, although we didn’t actually see that happen during our testing. In addition to the built-in ports noted above, the inverter also has a hardwire connection that allows the inverter to interface directly with a power panel, which may be something some RVers or overlanders will want to take advantage of when broadening its use to other components.

A Solid Performer

Once installed and activated, the inverter performed exactly as expected. The unit powered on and started providing juice to anything we plugged into its outlets. We tested it with a few electronic devices, such as a smartphone, tablet, and laptop, as well as a lamp, a small TV, a food processor, and a portable air conditioner. In all cases, everything fired up without a hitch and ran or recharged exactly as we hoped it would.

The only negative aspect of the inverter is that its dual fans were a little loud at times, particularly if we were operating under a heavier load. That may not be much of an issue if it is installed in a storage compartment or other out-of-the-way place, but it is noticeable when it is close by. It wasn’t especially annoying, and it is likely something you’ll adapt to quickly, but it did stand out during our testing.

Other than that one small quibble, the BougeRV 2000W 12V Pure Sine Wave Inverter with Bluetooth worked flawlessly. The device is ruggedly built and uses efficient and reliable components, is easy to install, and supplies plenty of clean power to your rig. And priced at $289.99, it won’t break the bank either, making it a great investment for expanding or upgrading your existing power system.
