Black Book: RV Auction Sizes Dip as Shipments Decline

Black Book, which publishes a family of vehicle appraisal guides, has released the Black Book RV market commentary for July.

“Towable values have been very stable for four months, not really changing by more than one percent or so,” reported Eric Lawrence, Black Book principal analyst – specialty markets. “Motorhomes have been a bit more unpredictable, bouncing between the mid $60,000s and the mid $70,000s.  Recent RVIA reports showing that new shipments are down by nearly forty percent year over year – indicating dealers having fully stocked lots – likely explains the recent drop off in auction volume.

“Taking a closer look at the markets, we see that the average selling price for motorized units was $73,393 which is up $8,027 (12.3%) from the previous month,” Lawrence noted.  “Towables came in at $21,362, up $232 (1.1%) from last month.  One year ago the average motorhome sold for $68,948 and the average towable unit brought $20,198.”

Auction volume was down: motorhomes decreased 14.5% while towables dropped 8.1%. The average age of motor homes was ten years old (2013) and towables was five (2017).
