Utah-Based Indy RV Grows to Meet Competitive Challenge

Indy RV in the St. George/Hurricane, Utah, market has a lot going for it.

On the doorstep to Zion National Park, the dealership’s location is surrounded by people looking to take advantage of outdoor recreation opportunities in the area.

Owner Larry Cox and his wife, Stacey, have two sons – Skyler, who is the general manager, and Trevor, who is responsible for sales and marketing – already involved in the business, so they have a pretty good idea of what the future holds in terms of family ownership.

And the past several years have seen great business come through the dealership’s doors even before COVID.

So, when the family heard about nationwide giant Camping World buying up a location in the area, there was no panic or thought of giving up. The Cox family got busy making plans that today have resulted in a new 10,000-square-foot state-of-the-art sales and service facility.

“When Camping World bought out the other local dealerships we were left as the only family place in town,” Trevor Cox told RVBusiness on Wednesday afternoon while towing a new Outdoors RV Back Country travel trailer back to the dealership. “We had outgrown our location, so it was time to move on to bigger and better things.”

The dealership regularly has about 200 units in stock ranging from Outdoors RV, La Grande, Oregon, Eclipse Iconic RV, Forest River Cherokee, ATC and Keystone’s Alpine, Avalanche and Outback. It also handles an array of used models as well as consignments.

The additional space will make it easier for customers to get in and out of the lot with even the largest trailers, Cox said.

But it also means that Indy can offer an additional five service bays with 14-foot doors that will accommodate the largest of RVs.

“We basically quadrupled our service space,” Cox said. “We sold a bunch of trailers and had a lot of new customers that we needed to take care of. This space definitely lets us have more trailers at our facility that we can be working on. It gets our customers in and out within a week instead of two or three months like before.”

To help meet the customer demand, Indy also has increased the number of employees from 10 to 20, Cox said.

Located about an hour and a half north of Las Vegas, Cox said the dealership tries to offer a little bit of everything to attract not only local customers but those who are passing through.

“My dad always said he wanted to be like a candy shop where you could go in and pick your flavor of whatever you need,” Cox said with a laugh. “We have a bunch of toy haulers, a bunch of fifth wheels, a bunch of bumper-pulls…any size you are thinking of, really.”

Indy also has grown its parts and accessories store to keep up with demand. Cox said the store is able to have delivered most parts within 24 hours thanks to a distributer based out of Salt Lake City.
