Mercedes Teases an Electric Camper Van Prototype

Electric vehicles are all the rage these days, with new cars, trucks, and vans announced on an almost-weekly basis. Even the RV industry has gotten caught up in the EV craze, with several major manufacturers introducing prototype models over the past year. Now, you can add Mercedes-Benz to that list, as the German automaker is teasing an electric camper van that it plans to unveil in early December.

Dubbed the Concept EQT Marco Polo, the small camper van made its debut via a press release on the Mercedes website. The vehicle rides on the company’s existing T-Class compact van platform, which is sold in the European market. The electric version will be roughly the same size as its gas-powered sibling, but the placement of its batteries will change its center of gravity when driving and potentially free up more interior space.

Speaking of which, the van’s interior is designed to be versatile and modular. Mercedes says it will come with a pop-up sleeping space equipped with a bed and an onboard kitchen unit to facilitate weekend camping getaways. But during the week, those components can easily be removed, transforming the EQT into a commuter vehicle. This could make it a more viable option for consumers who can’t afford both a regular car and an RV.

Beyond that, not much else is known about the Concept EQT Marco Polo at this time. Mercedes hasn’t revealed the EV’s range, type and number of electric motors, or the size of its battery pack. The company is saving that information for December 2, when the camper van will make its official debut.

It is important to note that for now, the EQT camper van is only a concept vehicle, although it could go on sale for consumers sometime in the future. If it does become an actual product that Mercedes sells, it seems unlikely that it will make its way stateside. The current T-Class models aren’t sold in North America, although demand for a small electric camper van could change that.

Find out more about the Concept EQT Marco Polo on the Mercedes-Benz website, and stay tuned for more information in early December.
