Dutch Oven Recipes: Easy Sloppy Joes

Easy sloppy joes are a delicious, easy-to-make and an absolute classic meal for any age group. After a long day outside, hiking, or playing on the water, it is nice to get back to the campsite and not have to prep a meal for 40 minutes.

This recipe, adapted from Taste of Home,  feeds quite a bit so if you’re making it for only a few people, I would recommend halving it. By the way, if you’re looking for a Dutch oven, this is our favorite one, and this is the best way to clean it.

Easy Sloppy Joes

This is a terrific, tame recipe for making sloppy joes over the campfire — or any heat source for that matter. If you want to spice it up a bit you can add chili powder, cayenne or any of a variety of other peppers or hot sauces. This recipe is a great base to start from, but then add to suit your own tastes.

  • Recipe type: Dinner
  • Cuisine: Camp Cooking
  • Serves: 10

Ingredients

  • 2 pounds ground turkey or beef
  • ½ cup chopped onion
  • 2 celery ribs with leaves, chopped
  • ¼ cup chopped green pepper
  • 1-2/3 cups canned crushed tomatoes
  • ¼ cup ketchup
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon white vinegar
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon steak sauce
  • ½ teaspoon garlic salt
  • ¼ teaspoon ground mustard
  • ¼ teaspoon paprika
  • 8 to 10 hamburger buns, split

Instructions

Cook the meat with onion, celery and green pepper inside the Dutch oven until it’s no longer pink and the vegetables are tender. Next, drain and then stir in the next nine ingredients. Simmer, uncovered, for 35 to 40 minutes or until heated through, stirring occasionally. Serve about a half of a cup of sloppy joe on a bun.
