Campspot Reports Younger Campers Driving Outdoor Demand

After months of speculation around the potential impact of inflation on American travelers, it’s clear that outdoor travel and camping are only continuing to pick up steam, according to a release.

Campspot, a leading outdoor marketplace and reservation software provider, reported a 130% year-over-year increase in January demand, with reservations for the 2023 spring months already outpacing last year’s by 35%. While demand has remained strong among frequent campers and full-time RV-ers, the company is noting fresh interest among Gen Z and Millennial campers and today announced integrations geared toward reaching new segments of today’s travelers.

Campspot now offers its campground software partners the opportunity to integrate their listings with Vrbo and other leading travel sites, including via their existing Booking.com integration, to support these businesses in targeting previously untapped customers and filling inventory that might otherwise have gone unbooked. The news is part of a broader digitization trend for the industry, and provides campgrounds the opportunity to reach users of three of the most popular online travel platforms, while offering those travelers the opportunity to experience the outdoors more easily.

Michael Scheinman

“The camping industry has matured significantly, even in the last five years,” said Michael Scheinman, CEO of Campspot. “What was a highly manual process for both campers and campgrounds has only recently been optimized into a convenient online booking experience that today’s younger consumers simply expect. We’re now meeting new travelers where they’re already searching for their next trip and providing them with unique lodging options, which helps facilitate exploration among more soon-to-be campers.”

The entrance of camping-specific aggregators to the market in the last decade helped shift the campsite booking process from phone calls to taps of a finger. Since then, young campers are increasingly coming on board. Campspot reports that site visits in 2022 by campers in the 18-34 age range increased more than 140% year over year. During the 2022 peak summer camping season, 18-24 year olds were the second fastest growing segment, led by travelers in the 34-44 age range. With camping demand expected to grow throughout 2023, expanded booking options and a more seamless online experience can only mean good news for campers- of any age.
