If you’re headed northeast and looking for interesting places to camp, Pennsylvania is a goldmine! It’s full of fascinating history, covered in lush forests, and dotted with charming little towns. If you want a destination that’s close to a big city but still offers a quiet oasis, check out Fox Den Acres!

This RV park is on the outskirts of Pittsburgh, but the region is so heavily forested that you would hardly even know it. Many visitors have passed through Fox Den Acres and left lovely reviews, so it caught our attention. After looking a little closer, we agree that this is a campground that’s definitely worth a look if you’re planning to visit the area.

You can enjoy a classic campground feeling here thanks to the natural surroundings and rustic decor. But this is balanced with access to great amenities and entertainment options. Whether you stay within the park boundaries or explore the nearby area, you’re bound to have a great visit.

Overview

Fox Den Acres is located in New Stanton, Pennsylvania, about 40 minutes away from the downtown area of Pittsburgh. You can easily explore the city while you camp here. Other nearby cities include Greensburg, Uniontown, and Bethel Park.

Several beautiful rivers run through this area as well. Guests can fish the Youghiogheny River, the Monongahela River, or the Kiskiminetas River. Looking for a lake? Then take a visit to Beaver Run, the Unity Reservoir, or the Bridgeport Reservoir.

If you don’t feel like traveling, the park itself also has a small scenic pond, as well as a pool. Trees and hills surround the property on all sides, providing a lush background for your campsite.

Fox Den Acres is a pretty large campground, too. It has a grand total of 350 sites, so there’s always a good chance of finding an opening. The sites are arranged in various loops and offshoots, so it won’t feel like you’re staying in a crowded parking lot. Trees and green space also separate many of the areas to offer a greater sense of privacy.

As another bonus, full hookups are provided at every RV site. Guests can enjoy access to cable TV, Wi-Fi, water, sewage connections, and electricity (30/50 amp). Picnic tables and fire pits are also available at most sites.

Rates

You might be bracing yourself to hear what the price is, but don’t worry about it! RV sites only cost $47 per night, which is definitely a bargain for a place like this. Tent camping is also available for $30–$35 per night. You can even get discounted prices for weekly or monthly visits if you want to stay longer.

RVs of all shapes and sizes are welcome here. There are several big-rig sites available, with the largest ones being about 120 feet long!

Just remember that this campground is only open on a seasonal basis. It opens for business on May 1, and closes on October 31 each year. So be sure to stop by sometime during that window if you want to stay here.

Amenities

A big part of what separates a good campground from a great one is the amenities! Fortunately, this RV park has a lot to offer, both in terms of comfort and entertainment.

For starters, all the basics are covered, such as restrooms, showers, and the full hookups we mentioned previously. With this setup, you’ll be able to camp for long periods of time. The only downside is that there are no laundry facilities on-site, but you are in close proximity to laundromats in the surrounding towns.

But if you need to stock up on some essential items, stop by the Trading Post (the campground store). It stocks grocery staples, RV supplies, propane, and more! A game room and a wildlife museum are also located within the park for a little extra fun.

But the grounds are one of the best parts about Fox Den Acres. This is a huge park that’s located in a gorgeous area, so why not enjoy the outdoors while you’re here? Guests can take advantage of the swimming pool, the playground, the sports field, the basketball courts, and the fishing lake.

Pets are welcome here as well, and they’ll love the chance to run around such a large green space. If you just want to stretch your legs, you can get a nice walk in by just wandering around the property! It’s quite large and there’s a lot to see, so take your time.

Nearby Activities/Attractions

You can easily spend your entire visit relaxing at your campsite, but there’s also plenty to do in the surrounding area. If you want to get out in nature, there are plenty of nature trails and hikes you can try. Some of the best ones include Emerald View Park/Trail, Seldom Seen Greenway, Frick Park Tour Loop, and Ohiopyle and Cucumber Falls.

As we mentioned previously, this RV park is just a short drive away from Pittsburgh and all the satellite towns around it. Pittsburgh is a major city and it’s full of historical sites, fascinating attractions, and unique tours.

If you really want to see all that the city has to offer, you may need to book and extended stay at Fox Den Acres! But some of the highlights for visitors include:

Of course, this area is also full of various shops, family fun zones, theaters, and more. If you’re looking for something fun to do, you won’t have to go too far out of your way to find it!

The restaurant scene is also incredible here, with countless options to choose from. You can find any type of cuisine here and a huge range of prices. Once again, there are far too many dining options to cover in a single post, but here are some of the most well-reviewed options.

Of course, nobody knows better than the locals, so be sure to ask around to get more recommendations. Your fellow campers may also have some good insight, especially if they’ve stayed near the city before.

Reviews

Finally, it’s time to look at some reviews. Fox Den Acres has scored quite well across the board! On RV LIFE Campgrounds, it has a score of 8.3/10. This comes from more than 100 reviews, with the vast majority ranking it as “Good” or “Excellent”.

Visitors have reported that they love the value for the price here. You get access to a huge campground, lots of amenities, and a good location, all for under $50 per night. Many people also complimented the staff and how well they maintained the park.

To be fair, there were a few criticisms as well! Some guests remarked that the roads to get in and out of the park were steep and narrow, which is tough if you’re driving an RV. Others noted that the water quality was mediocre and some of the campsites didn’t have any shade.

Generally, the feedback was positive though. Some campers who return here year after year even said that it’s getting better all the time! So even if there are some complaints now, who knows how it might change in the future?

Even if it remains the same as it is now, Fox Den Acres is still a great place to stay if you plan to camp in Pennsylvania. Add it to your list!
