Must-Have Office Upgrades for RV Work
Recently, I wrote a post on awesome tech that you should consider investing in while working on the road. What that article didn’t cover was how to stay comfortable as you complete your tasks in your RV home office. That’s what we’re going to talk about today!
Following are some of the top products for making your RV office more functional and comfortable. Combine these with the items in our RV office tech article, and you’ll be able to get work done easily.
GreenForest 2-Tier Foldable Computer Desk
I know a few full time RVers who are lucky enough to have a dedicated office area in their home-on-wheels. That said, these lucky people are few and far between. The vast majority of RVers I know (including myself) end up working wherever they can find the space. That’s where a folding desk comes into play.
The GreenForest 2-Tier Foldable Computer Desk is small enough to be set up pretty much anywhere. It also includes a second tier, giving you extra space to set stuff. When you’re finished working, simply fold the desk up and put it against a wall, in a closet, or behind another piece of furniture. That means it’s out of the way until next time. Available online and at Wal-Mart.
Cozy Roadie Portable Executive Fold-Up Office Chair
You can totally use the foldable desk listed above while sitting on the couch or a dining room chair. That said, it’ll be even more comfortable if you use an actual office chair. Unfortunately, most traditional office chairs are bulky and not great for use in the small space of an RV. The solution? The Cozy Roadie Portable Office Chair.
This chair is incredible. It’s a full-size, fully functional, ergonomic office chair that folds down into a small storage box that can be pushed under the couch or put into an under-the-bed storage area. I really can’t imagine a better chair for those who put in long hours of desk work in their RV. There’s also an all-new adapter kit that works with many office chairs to transform them into a custom Cozy Roadie!
Seville Classics Mobile Laptop Desk Cart
Another compact desk option that is great for RVers is the Seville Classics Mobile Laptop Desk Cart. This particular desk doesn’t offer space for anything more than a laptop. But that’s part of what makes it RV-friendly, and many people don’t need more space than that anyway.
The desk is set on rolling casters, making it easy to move from one spot to the next. The height is adjustable, meaning it can be used while sitting or while standing. To top it off, it’s one of the most stable standing desk options on the market, so you won’t have to worry about wobbling while you work.
DropTop Light Wall-Mounted Folding Desk
The last desk option I want to mention is the DropTop Light Wall-Mounted Folding Desk. I love this option because it gives you a solid work surface when needed and offers storage. It holds everything in place even while the RV is traveling down the road, and you can add a painting to the bottom side of the desk so it acts as wall decor when folded up.
The thing you do have to understand about this desk (and other wall-mounted desks) is that they are quite heavy and will require a solid mounting job. I chose to list the light version of the desk for this reason, but even with the light version you’ll want to make sure to mount properly to avoid damaging your RV walls.
VIVO Full Motion Monitor Desk Mount
Many people find that it makes sense to mount their monitor to save desk space. There is of course the option to mount the monitor to the wall, but if you’re in an RV, you may have a hard time finding a secure way to wall-mount a large display. In this case, the VIVO Full Motion Monitor Desk Mount is the next best thing.
This adjustable monitor arm supports screens up to 38 inches and offers full articulation, allowing you to position your monitor at the perfect angle while saving desk space. It does require that you have a dedicated stationary desk, but if that isn’t a problem for your setup, it is a great solution.
Get Keepers
Finding places to store office supplies in an RV is tricky, especially if you don’t have a dedicated, permanent office area. You want the supplies to be easily accessible, but don’t want them to take up precious counter or table space. It’s also important that everything stays nicely in place on travel days.
The best solution I’ve found? Get Keepers’ clever “Anything Keepers” and “Everything Keepers”. These things mount to the underside of a cabinet using military-grade adhesive. Once installed, they can be easily pulled down and out to reveal their contents. After you’ve gotten what you need, simply push the storage bin back up under the cabinet.
I adore that these are so easy to install and that they sit out of the way while still providing super easy access to those things you use on a daily basis.
JOTO Cable Management Sleeve
Nothing bothers me more than a bunch of cables laying around making a mess of things. Fortunately, there are plenty of cable management systems out there these days, including the JOTO Cable Management Sleeve. This is a flexible neoprene sleeve that bundles multiple cables together, making it easier to keep your workspace tidy. Available online.
TaoTronics LED Desk Lamp
It’s important that you have enough light while you work. Working in a dimly lit space can lead to bad posture, squinting, and all kinds of other issues. If you find you don’t have enough light while sitting at your RV desk, consider the TaoTronics LED Desk Lamp.
Featuring adjustable brightness and color temperature, this energy-efficient lamp provides eye-friendly illumination. It can be adjusted to provide light where you need it and can be easily moved from one spot to another. It even includes a USB charging port, something we can all appreciate.
Clam QuickSet Tent
If you can’t seem to find space to work in your RV, or if you just need to get away from your noisy kids to get something done, a Clam QuickSet Tent might be just the thing. We’ve known a number of full-time RVing families who have set up outdoor offices in tents like this. It works well, and this tent “office” space can be used for other things once the work day is done.
Of course, working in a tent does also come with drawbacks. You’ll need to find a way to control the temperature in the tent (a space heater, fans, and a portable A/C unit will do the trick) and you will need to be prepared to head indoors in case of severe weather. Otherwise, this is a pretty solid solution that all RVers should consider, especially if they have a hard time focusing while in their rig.
As you can see, there are plenty of products out there that can help make working on the road as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Find the right kind of desk, pick up a super comfy chair, and get ready to get things done as you explore our amazing country!
