Hikers Caught on Illegal Haiku Stairs Trail Throwing ‘Metal Railing’

It’s illegal to hike the Haiku Stairs on the Hawaiian island of O’ahu. Local government has determined that the world-famous path, also called “the Stairway to Heaven,” is too dangerous for visitors, and the stairs once faced demolition because people refuse to stay away, although the demolition effort was halted last summer.

The Honolulu Police Department announced on Thursday that officials arrested two hikers for trespassing on the trail and for “throwing a metal railing over the side of Haiku Stairs.” The hikers were part of a larger group, and the police department expects to continue to arrest more people in conjunction with these offenses.
