Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina Unlocks Tropical Vacation Fun in Florida
Follow the Overseas Highway southwest of Miami for tropical fun in the sun. The route, also known as Highway 1, connects the famous Florida Keys island chain, and travelers who love camping close to the Florida ocean will find their sweet spot at Sunshine Key RV Resort and Marina. Located on a small island just across the water from Bahia Honda Key, the resort overlooks the Gulf of Mexico and is conveniently located on the Overseas Highway for easy exploration of the surrounding islands.
Island Paradise
Sunshine Key Resort and Marine occupies 75 acres of lush beachfront property. The resort’s long menu of activities tempts travelers to break out of their comfort zones: Many travelers may head straight to the marina’s fishing pier; others may rent a kayak and paddleboard to explore the clear waters offshore. Brought your own watercraft? Lower it on the boat ramp and moor it on one of the resort’s docks (any boat longer than 18 feet must have a slip reservation).
Active travelers can go dancing, take an exercise class, play basketball or
volleyball, or go swimming in the ocean. Pickleball and tennis are also on offer. Travelers who prefer a slower pace can indulge in arts and crafts classes or play cards or bingo with fellow campers. An onsite activity director keeps things moving along.
Sunny Sites
Sunshine Key offers a variety of sites. Lovers of ocean views can reserve Elite Water Front sites, located right on the water, which are full hookups with 30- and 50-amp service as well as a picnic table. The same amenities are found in the Elite Marina Front sites, which overlook the resort’s marina. Interior sites also can be reserved, but wherever you stay, you’re just a short stroll from the shore. Cottages also are available.
Getting Around the Keys
Just a short drive southwest on the Overseas Highway will take travelers to Bahia Honda, a 500-plus-acre gem that contains a world of recreational possibilities. This verdant state park offers a slice of the untamed Florida Keys.
The 3.5-mile hard-surface road that winds through Bahia Honda’s landscape is open to cyclists. Ride to the historic Bahia Honda bridge, a 5,055-foot railroad bridge that links Spanish Harbor Key to the west with Bahia Honda. Even though the span is no longer in use, the graceful steel truss building serves as a magnificent photo backdrop.
Swim in the warm waters of Florida Bay or the Atlantic Ocean to cool yourself after an amazing ride on the level terrain. Travel magazines have given the island’s pristine white sand beaches high marks.
Pint-Size Bambi
Big Pine Key is a relaxed hamlet of roughly 5,000 people that may be reached by driving four miles west from Bahia Honda across the Overseas Highway. Sip a tall glass of beer and savor a slice of pizza under a thatched patio cover in the famous No Name Pub.
Over 50% of the island’s 9.9-square-mile surface comprises the National Key Deer Refuge, home to the Key Deer, an endangered subspecies of white-tailed deer that is the smallest deer in North America. As you explore the marshes and woodlands of the refuge, get a peek at these elegant animals.
Access to the green, tropical surroundings is made possible by several nature trails, and guests may also see other endangered species that call the refuge home, such as the white ibis and the Lower Keys marsh rabbit. Look out for the reef gecko and the butterfly known as Bartram’s Hairstreak.
Picture-Perfect Fauna
Just a few miles north of the tourist center on Key Deer Boulevard is the Blue Hole Observation Platform, a treasure trove for photographers. A portion of the area where the limestone was mined has filled with fresh water, and the region is teeming with native flora. See wading birds, ospreys, American alligators, and green herons.
